Hi

I just ran into a similar problem and following Keith's instructions i
almost got all the way, but...

The full description of the problem is another tread "removing an extra
boot record from hda1???" ... (found this one after posting the message)

Now I haven't got the invalid media type error, but I think the fat32
boot record i copied doesn't fit. In my case the faulty boot record
landed on hda1 (being the partition with the boot flag) I had an empty
partition exactly the same size as hda5, so I copied that, with the
command
dd if=/dev/hda5 of=/tmp/boot_record bs=512 count=1

ls -l /tmp/boot_record
gives

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 512 feb 28 23:00 /tmp/boot_record

Then i copied the record with

dd if=/tmp/boot_record of=/dev/hda1

Now i can boot with a W98 boot disk and se all the files (with dir and
even start running a dos application) but starting windows is not
possible. I get the famous blue screen informing me that a vfat -
initialization failure,
some recourse is missing and that vfat cant proceed with the
initialization ... system stopped! (and Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't even work)

My guess was that there was something missing from the hda5 bootrec
about the bootfalg, so tried to reinitialize the flag by removing it and
adding it again in both fdisk in bootW98 and cfdisk from linux. Nothing
helped.

I tried reinstalling W98 but it also stopped with the same error after
first restart in the installation process.

Any suggestions ??? ... if not do you think formatting C will solve the
problem ???

Kristjan
