Just do an 
export NTTPSERVER=your.news.server
before youstart slrn (or add it to your .bashrc or whatever shell you're
using.)

pan is fantastic - my favorite GUI-reader.

But this should go to news.software.readers and not here, so xpost and
fup2 accordingly.
