Go to the computer fair. You'll find whole computers there fairly
often. I bought a DEC Venturis at the fair for $125: 75 MHz i586
with 24 Mb of RAM, a 400 Mb hard drive, and an S3 Virge video
card. I was lucky though, I had a monitor that suits it.

Even better, print out a copy of the Hardware HOWTO and take
it to the fair as a buying guide. Buy parts. Build your own.

You can download the Hardware HOWTO and heaps of other
documnetation from the Linux Documentation Project's
Australian mirror at http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/LDP/

Good luck.
