I have the same login problem here as well. I switched back to xdm for now.
The way to get out of your predicament is to press left cntrl-alt and f-2 or
f-3 or any other f key. This will send you back to a console where you can
log in as root and edit your inittab file with vi or whatever. if you press
cntrl-alt-f7 it will put you back into xwindows. Hope somebody here figures
out the login problem though.
