To check if PPP support is compiled into your kernel, at least on my
heavily upgraded Slackware system ...

just watch the boot up messages ... or after logging in do a 'dmesg |
more' and watch for the 'ppp' configuration messages ... should be
about 6 lines (?) within the first third of the messages.

I don't remember about my default kernal after my first install as I
immediately re-compiled to add in sound support for my SoundBlaster
PnP card. That was a year ago (Christmas 1996) and I haven't looked
back!

I just recently posted my PPP dialup scripts to comp.os.linux.help if
you'd like to take a look at them.

Good luck ... it works well, is very powerful from a configuration
point of view and very flexible for changing situations. The earlier
versions of Win95 DialUp were very clunky and feature poor, the newer
ones seem to have resolved some of those problems.
