How do you go about installing pppd? Where do you find it? I've read dozens of articles on the net about what to do with it after you've got it.... but I can't seem to get the file itself! Help!

Depends on which distribution you use. Under Debian, all you have to
do is edit /etc/ppp.chatscript
and you should be home free. To get it to connect, just type 'pon'.
In any case, /etc/ppp/options should have :
connect "chat -f /etc/ppp.chatscript"
defaultroute
persist
in there some where.
To connect then, (if you don't have pon), you type
/usr/sbin/pppd /dev/modem <modem speed>
you can put it in a shell script called pon, and put the pon file in
somehwere like /usr/local/bin
#!/bin/bash
/usr/sbin/pppd /dev/modem <modem speed>
