Hi All,
I'm new here.
Need ideas to get an ATI all in wonder card to work with X. I have tried all
the instructions. Still have original manuals. Can't get it to work. Any
suggestions.

After I run f86config, I get a distorted screan that I cannot use properly.

I guess that's a screen with lines running vertically across the screen.
If so, that means either the monitor or the video card settings are
incompatible. Like I had a monitor that would distort 800x600
but displayed 1024x768 and 6400x480 without problems.
Best to start in safe resolution 640x480x16 (256 colors) then
increase the resolutions to see which ones work. Same with the monitor
display refresh rates 60-72mhz before going higher.

I'm on X.org but if you could post your /etc/Xfree866.conf maybe
someone will notice an error.

Here's a Howto link on XFree86

Yea, that is right. I will keep trying or I will see if I can get a copy of
the file.
Thanks

I get confused with the ramdac and clock settings. I am using an old aopen
ap5t mb 286mmx overclocked. I still have all the manuals but I can't find
anything to make me comfortable with the ramdac and clock stuff.

My apology, the link below is outdated, had I spent time reading it I
wouldn't have posted it.

I think you need to run $ /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config
and answer the questions. If you can't get there from the gui it should
work from the commandline.

You need the timings from the ATI-All In Wonder Pro which if it's a AIW
128 Pro goes from 1600x1200@85mhz to 640x480@200mhz.

Your monitor may not support these higher resolutions, so you'll need the
refresh rates for your monitor as well. As I said, 800x600@72mhz or
640x480@60mhz are safe modes, except refresh rates below 70mhz is bad for
your eyes.

Regarding hardware problems you should post the video card model,
monitor model and Linux version.
