Mozilla/Netscape Import Utility Problem

Hi there,

I am using Mozilla 0.93 and also Netscape 6.1. The reason I upgraded to the new
version (Mozilla 0.92 to 0.93 and try Netscape 6.1) was because I was looking
for the import utility which I thought would have been fixed in the newer
version. Up till this moment, I still cannot use the import utility (Address
Book and Mail messages) successfully. When I run the import utility, under the
section 'Please select the program from which you would like to import:' the
only option there was 'Text' for AddressBook and none for Mail messages. I want
to import all my AddressBook entries and Mail messages stored under Outlook
Express setting in Windows and the help section of Mozilla/Netscape obviously
states that the import utility allows me to do that (I have exported
addressbook from outlook express in .cvs format which is tab or comma separated
text):

Importing Address Books and Mail Messages

If you have an address book from a previous version of Netscape Communicator or
another email program, you can add its entries to your personal address book.
When you import another address book, Mail creates a new address book with the
imported entries.

You can import address books and mail messages from Eudora, Outlook, and
Outlook Express. You can import the following types of address book file
formats: tab or comma separated text or LDIF. Netscape Communicator address
books use the LDIF format.

To export address book entries from Netscape Communicator so you can import
them into Netscape 6:

   1. In Netscape Communicator, choose Address Book from the Communicator menu.
   2. Select the address book that you want to export.
   3. From the File menu in the Address Book window, choose Export.
   4. Type a name for the exported address book.
   5. Choose the LDIF file format.
   6. Click Save. Remember the location where you saved the address book file,
so you can find it when you're ready to import it into Netscape 6. The file
will have a .LDIF extension.

To import messages or address book files into Netscape 6:

   1. From the File menu in Netscape 6, choose Import.
   2. Follow the instructions to import mail folders and address book files.
   3. If you want to import a Netscape Communicator address book, choose "Text"
from the list in the second screen of the wizard.

Can anyone help me with this? Thanks heaps.

Alimin

Importing mail from Outlook Express in Windows is a piece of cake but
I don't know about Linux. All I can suggest is you make sure your
windows partition is mounted and hope that Mozilla can find the mail
or allows you to show it where OE's mail is located.

As for the address book, all you need to do it tell it the name of the
file. You do select the text option as a cvs file is a text file.
Once you have done this you should have all your addresses neatly
formatted in your Mozilla address book. I have done it many times and
never had a problem.

Hope this helps cheers Zeph

I did the next:
[Windows]
- Install Mozilla (win32)
- Import mail (or anything else) from Mozilla (it found itself any
mailer installed on Windows)

then ...

[Linux]
- Mount Windows partition (where you save "new" Mozilla mailbox)
- Set the path to mailbox in Mozilla (linux)

Windows and Linux, both will use the same mailbox.

I did it from Outlook 2000 (win32) to Mozilla 0.9.2 (linux) in a few
minutes !

Bye and good luck !

Have you considered using mozilla's bugzilla system for reporting such
problems. It requires a bit of fiddling to figure out how to use it,
but once you do, you can search their data base to see if someone else
has reported the same problem and if there are any workarounds. One
should exercise care in reporting something as a "bug" if it may just be
a misunderstanding about how to use mozilla.

Here is something you might try. Make a directory in your home directory
called nsmail copy the mail from Windows to nsmail. I personally prefer
Netscape, but I also have Mozilla. Mozilla always checks my nsmail
directory and imports whatever is in it. I don't know where that Mozilla
stores the mail, but if you do, it might work if you copy the Windows
mail directory there.

Is that true that when you try to use the import utility for importing the
mails in Linux you can't see any option, can you? Whereas for address book
importing process, there is at least one option i.e. 'Text'.
If there is no option for mail importing, then the only way to do this is by
setting the path of the Local Folder to the one in Windows partition, but why
did I fail to do this?

Thanks Jamess.
Finally got it working. I see, the problem is because linking the Local Folder
path to the mails in Windows partition is alright but the problem lies with the
permission and owner of the files. So I moved all the mails in the Mozilla
Windows to 'nsmail' directory in Linux and then changed all the permission and
owner of the files to myself and linking the Local Folder path in Mozilla Linux
to 'nsmail' directory and it is done!

Thanks again for any help provided. Hopefully anybody else having the same
problem could find this beneficial solving the problem.
