Can't open /dev/sequencer

In a new installation of Mandrake 7.2, where my SBlive has been correctly
detected and plays wav and mp3 files correctly, I can play midi files. I
get the above error that the app can't open /dev/sequencer and saying it
might be busy ( I am running nothing that I am aware of that might be using
it). Any ideas on what is wrong?
