Hi there, Last week I wasn't going to lose it...I wrote........ Ok..the story so far. Bought Mandrake Linux (enhanced Red hat the box said), used the Partition Magic programme in Win 95, created partitions and loaded up Linux. Great...I have the bash shell...and there my friends it stops. Now, I think this is pretty common but my monitor doesn't want to perform when it comes to the KDE desktop. Some specs MONITOR Make VISAGE Model 105ED B'width 65 MHz H/Freq 30-54 V/Freq 50-120 Has anyone one of these...?? Motherboard Pentium ASUS SP97-V with SiS 5598 integrated VGA (4MB) on board.... ....sooooo...where am I this week. Worked out how to use XFree....went back and installed the bits I was missing. Got into the low res VGA16 screen and configured it all. Then...on the re-boot / Xstart......nothing. A blue screen with a log in box and blacked out text. Ctrl-Alt - + only resizes the picture. However if I boot on a run level 5...ie straight into the desktop...I can see all the icons.....caramba....I can see the silhouettes that is and my mouse pointer is a big white box. Clicking on the outlines gives just that. Outlines of the windows but no text. I am thinking..is this a monitor or a font problem. I think possibly both..the text is missing / blacked out but the picture is pretty distorted. I have run XFree and xconfigurator until I am blue in the face. I have contacted my motherboard people.....????? So I then upgraded to Xfree 4.0.....ensuring I obtained the correct library. Installation of the mandatory files just left me with a grey screen and a big X. So, I was better off with 3.3.35mdk that I had. I'm thinking of tossing the whole install and going back to loading 3.3.35 up. 1) Has anyone any info on this card / monitor other than what is at Xfree and the other websites....specifically SiS 5598....??? 2) Does anyone want a copy of my config file to have a look. I have calculated some modelines but am not sure where to put them in.....I have become very familiar with vi. 3) I'll give you my URL so you can go for a bit of a laugh. 4) Friends I am despairng......what shall I make my next project when I throw my Linux discs in the bin........???? Thanking you in anticipation, and thanks to all those who helped last week. MOB I can't seem to deliver mail to your box...: - ) John

Hi Johnny, I'm sorry to here that you're having so much trouble. Unfortunately, the SiS chips can be a bit buggy, but there is hope. There are a few basic steps to get things working. First, Make sure you are using the XF86_SVGA server. The SiS chips DO NOT work with the generic VGA server. Second: Edit your /etc/XF86Config file and add the following lines under where it says Section "Device" for you graphics card. Option "noaccel" Option "sw_cursor" This should at least get you a visible screen. Third: Make sure you are running an up to date version of XFree86. Fourth: On your system, take a look at /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/README.SiS and play with some of the options to try and get the best performance. Good Luck, Wally Johnny wrote: > Hi there, > > Last week I wasn't going to lose it...I wrote........ > > Ok..the story so far.
