Hi there, I'm having some problems intalling linux, well actually, it's actually a partitioning problem, and I would really appreciate some help. I've been running linux on and off for about 8 months now. Unfortunately had to take it off my HD a little while back due to some work that needed to be done. My problem is this, I was going to try OS/2 Warp (got a copy of it of the front of an APC mag.), so I used fips to split my partion, around about 540mb... After this I had some problem with intalling OS/2, which I'm not going to worry about right onw, I'd rather get Linux going. Now I have a fair bit of free space left on my drive now (only 3gb to begin with), unfortunately I have some files that defrag won't move, therefore no fips... ( I read somebodies post about changing attributes, however I'm not game, because I actually have a stable setup of windows, and thats such a rare thing that I don't want to endanger it!) I also have a copy of Partition Magic, but it doesn't want to do the job.... (further explanation follows) I'm running PM CE (Caldera Edition), I'm not sure whether this version is slightly disabled, or it's just how PM is. But all will let me do is change the free space(the before mentioned 540, or so) which is not enough for linux (well technically it is, but I want more...) or it will let me split my current windows drive, which the split would be 800mb, which on it's own is still not quite enough. I would like to be able to join that 800 to the 540 (perfect!) but I can't work out how... Any advice would be grea, thanks. PS - On an unrelated matter, I'm trying to learn how to program, I started with C, kinda understand a few basics, but have retreated to python (i'm told it's a good language to start with) and I'm having a fine time with it... But one thing that I can't seem to find (net or bookstores) is what I would call "programme design", as in, everything I have seem to be, "you know how to programme, this is how to do it in "insert language here". But not much on actually how to design algorithms beyond maths (usefull, and I'm sure I learn how to turn it into everything I need, but for now I'm struggling). Somebody mentioned reading the RFC's, I've had a look, some of it makes sense, some of it's a little above my head (for now). What I'm looking for is information on how to put the language and the information in RFC's into practice, I think this is what I'm looking for anyway. Again, any help or advice would be muchly appreciated. Thanks.

From the FIPS docs: "before starting FIPS you _must_ now defragment your Harddisk. All of the space that will be used for the new partition must be free. Be aware that the Windows Swapfile will not be moved by most defragmentation programs. You must uninstall it (in the 386enhanced part of the Windows Control Panel) and rein- stall it after using FIPS. If you use IMAGE or MIRROR, the last sector of the hard disk contains a hidden system file with a pointer to your mirror files. You _must_ delete this file before using FIPS (it will be recreated the next time you run mirror). Do 'attrib -r -s -h image.idx' or 'attrib -r -s -h mirorsav.fil' in the root directory, then delete the file." So if it's your Windows swap file, you can turn off virtual memory and get rid of it. Otherwise, you've got problems. Have you tried recruiting the empty space you created the first time round? > I'm running PM CE (Caldera Edition), I'm not sure whether this version is > slightly disabled, or it's just how PM is. If they are *contiguous* partitions at the end of the disk, and neither of them are being used for anything, you can delete both of them and then create a new partition out of the free space. If there are partitions in use after those two partitions, you can't do that without losing data.

Yes, already tried all those (from FIPS doc's too), thanks for your reply
though.
