S3 Trio3D/2x Agp Video Card Problem
#543

I have the following card:
S3 Trio3D/2X AGP 8MB (86C368)

(I am a novice to the world of linux)

I installed RH6.0. X Windows does not work.

My video card does not work with it. I got it to work but in an unbelieve
low resolution.

Has anyone got any ideas regarding how to fix my problem? I have read that
an updated XFree86 would help. Could someone tell me step by step how to
update the files. I have all necessary files for version 3.6 but cant seem
to unzip them and or use them. I gunziped them (.tgz) and it left a .tar.
Tar wouldnt then work.

I really need some help here. I have wasted to mush time here.

Looks as if you installed the wrong X Server. Try the SVGA server
(filename XF86_SVGA).

To upgrade XFree86 on RedHat, you should use the rpms from www.redhat.com. I
did this same upgrade. Actually it did nothing for my system and may not
for yours either. If you have very low resolution, the problem could well
be your monitor settings. Check in /etc/X11/XF86Config and look under
Monitor to see if the horiz and vert syncs are right. If you have put
Generic Monitor in, then that is the problem. There are places to find
these settings if you need them. Try doing this and post the results:
First exit from X. Then do:

startx &>startxlog

Post what is in startxlog.

Now about upgrading X. Do this first:

rpm -qa | grep XFree

This will give you a list of what you have. Then get those packages in
version 3.3.6 and put them in a fresh directory. Then go to that directory
as root and do
rpm -Uvh XFree*

This should load them all in the right order so that you don't get
dependancy errors.

Here are the packages I have. I never did upgrade the fonts, but I have
true type fonts in a directory on linux and that seems to work fine.

$ rpm -qa |grep XFree

XFree86-S3V-3.3.6-11
XFree86-SVGA-3.3.6-11
XFree86-75dpi-fonts-3.3.3.1-52
XFree86-xfs-3.3.6-11
XFree86-VGA16-3.3.6-11
XFree86-100dpi-fonts-3.3.3.1-52
XFree86-XF86Setup-3.3.6-11
XFree86-3.3.6-11
XFree86-libs-3.3.6-11

You only need one of the servers, the one you use. I was supposed to use
SVGA, which is why I got it, but turned out I had to use S3V. I have S3
86C385.

If you already have the 3.3.6 you're almost there. You need to copy your
tarball to the /var/tmp directory and extract the files by typing "tar -zxvf
<filename>" where filename is the name of the .tgz file you have. You should
then follow the install instructions from there. Complete instructions can
also be found here: http://www.au.xfree86.org/3.3.6/RELNOTES10.html#14
The server you need is the SVGA server, and the easiest way to set it up is to
use XF86Setup. I was able to use 800x600x24 without difficulty, but other
resolutions should also be available.

It also means that $foo[1] is a part of @foo, not a part of $foo. This may
seem a bit
weird, but that's okay, because it is weird.

He's using RedHat; so it is better to use the rpms. I tried using the
tarballs before I knew that and it means getting rid of the old rpms for
XFree86. Then there is no indication of XFree86 in the rpm database which
confuses things as far as rpm keeping track of dependencies when loading
other rpms. It really is not a good idea, especially for something as
central as XFree86.

Download the latest XSVGA server and install it -- I have the
3.3.6 one (latest stable version). Using RPMs is easier to
install.
I use a resolution of 1024x768 at 85Hz, but this is in function
of your monitor, not your card. Memory speed theoretically up to
230MHz, I only tried speeds up to 200MHz.
If your screen does not refresh properly when you move a window,
reduce the color depth to 16bits per pixel.
If your mouse pointer is a white square instead of an X or an
arrow (in any window manager -- KDE, windowmaker etc), reduce
your memory settings to 4M even if you have 8M.
Good luck!

I don't have that computer anymore (I built and configured it for someone else),
but I thought the S3 trio 3D/2X was listed in the chipset config tab of
XF86Setup - look for S3 86c368 TRIO 3D/2X - I think that chipset number is right
- it will be similar. The memory should be 4096, and don't probe the clock.

You may be right - I installed over the top of an existing 3.3.5 setup without
problems, but that was on a machine which is unlikely to ever have any other
software installed onto it. I was more concerned about demonstrating how to extract
a tarball - an essential survival trait on Linux I'd think.

Sometimes playing around with the monitor parameters works. Try progressively
lower monitor settings and you might get something to work. Or try SUSE 6.3 --
DO NOT startx on initial install but instead let SAX work later. It does a
nice job with monitor settings. You can then use the custom settings for hsync
and vsync with Redhat and see if this works.
