Downloading and Installing Xfree86 3.3.5?

I've managed to install RH6.0 but not X. My SiS 6326 doesn't seem to like
it. I need to know how to download and run Xfree86 3.3.5. Apparently this
fixes it for my video card. What do i need to download (from binaries?) and
how do i install the files. I'm downloading them through my Windoze 98
machine.

You may be able to just down load the X server (the part that serves the
graphics from the computer to the graphics card) instead of the hole X set.
You can find X in many different places, inc. ftp.linuxberg.com and
sunsite.doc.ic.ac.uk if in the uk or sunsite.unc.ac if in the u.s. Any will
work, but I find LINUX berg to be best! and is the easies to find your way
around. I would sugest getting KDE or GNOME as well - it is worth the extra
download

Why are you downloading via your Win machine? You can download in Linux
from the command line. You can set up X to use the minimal VGA or even
minimal SVGA which your video card will certainly recognize and run.

SuSE made drivers for SiS motherboard integrated graphic chipsets, so try
(I think) www.suse.com/x/ and upload your Xfree with their .rpm, so you
don't have to download new XFree.

Ranga,

The best thing to do (since you have RedHat) is probably to download the "rpm" packages
for XFree86. You can probably get the latest from www.suse.com.

The rpm packages will have to be accessible from your linux system, so if you are downloading
them from win98, make sure to place them in a disk (or partition) which is readable from
linux as well.

Once you've downloaded the rpms, login to your linux system, then on a shell prompt type:
man rpm

This will give you the manual pages for the rpm command. This is the command that will
install the rpm packages that you have downloaded. Have a look at the man page. I also
recommend that, before you install the package for real, you do a "test" of the rpm command.
In the man page there will be a command line switch which you can turn on to cause the rpm
command to act as if installing the packages, but in reality, it does not.... This will allow you
to verify dependencies and some other stuff before you actually install things...

Good luck,
Jorge.

BTW, you will have to run the rpm command as root when you do the actual install!

I haven't tried the XFree86 3.3.5 but I've received several
E-mails from people saying they've less than desirable
results from it. I'm going to try the XFree86 3.3.4 next
week and post the results on my Support pages, I've been
told that for this video chipset it gives better results.
In the mean time you might find some pointers from my
SiS 6326 Support Pages at;

http://rampages.onramp.net/~slywolf

If you (or anyone else) get XFree86 3.3.5 working with the
SiS 6326 please let me know.

Have Fun :-)
Sterling

Go to ftp://ftp.redhat.com/rawhide/i386/RedHat/i386
and get them in RPM format.

Hi Guy's,

I also had problems getting XFree86 3.3.3.1-52 running with the
XFree86_3DLabs 3.3.3.1-52 driver.

IMHO, DO NOT EXPECT probing to get it right, you must hand tweak
/etc/X11/XF86Config to suit (trial and error)...

In my case, I tried each manufacturer available in xconf for the 3DLabs
chip set as my card was un-branded.

Secondly, in the Device section I had to set the VideoRam to 4096 (even
though the card has 8 Meg) and also use the NoLinear option, ie:

VideoRam	4096
Option NoLinear

This worked sweet.

I am not sure that you really need the latest versions of X/driver.

Try the SuSE website for XFree86 3.3.5 and it has instructions and
links for the needed libraries.

Hi. I'm using a computer with the SiS 6326 chipset, and it's working ok.

I set it up using the text based xf86config program, then had to edit a few
lines in the /etc/X11/XF86Config file:

In the Device Section;

VideoRam 4096, then uncomment Option "no accel" and Option
"fast_vram"

You will need a group of files from updates.redhat.com to make this work. I
recommend reading the howto on redhat's support site about upgrading
Xfree86. I downloaded about 8 files including:

xfree86 itself
development libs
vga server
mach_64 server (I needed this for my laptop; you will need another server
or the svga one or whatever)
100 dpi fonts
75 dpi fonts
the regular libs
xf86setup (which did not work for some reason)

Perhaps there were more. I placed all these into a temporary directory and
did an rpm -Uvh *rpm which updated everything at one swell foop. The
directions at redhat's support site provide pretty concise instructions on
how to accomplish this. I did not download to a windows system though. I
do not have one of those handy anymore except for a VMWare session I run on
occasion.
