I just installed Red Hat 5.0 on an all-Linux machine -- 133 Pentium, 1.6 g HDD., 48 M RAM After I got to the end of the install, the message told me to remove all media and reboot. I did so, and rebooting commenced just fine until it got to the end of the LILO. The last message on the screen was: "Unable to open initial console." Then it proceeds to reboot. It will do that all night and day if I leave the machine on. What do I do about it? Jack Lavelle -- Phoenix -- lavelle@speedchoice.com

Boot from floppy, mount your root partition on /mnt and create the correct /mnt/dev/console. The simplest way: cp -a /dev/console /mnt/dev/console Don't forget -a option. HAND, Al PS: BTW, what kind of joker configured the airnews.net? The message-ID is 78 characters long. It doesn't violate any RFC, but... <4016EF7E0657B9D0.103851E1A6180C72.B5E9584C216BB04D@library-proxy.airnews.net> looks like a creation of _very_ bored BNAFH. -- My theory is that someone's Emacs crashed on a very early version of Linux while reading alt.flame and the resulting unholy combination of Elisp and Minix code somehow managed to bootstrap itself and take on an independent existence. -- James Raynard in c.u.b.f.m on nature of Albert Cahalan

After a "successful" installation of Red Hat 5, I got the following message: >>. . .rebooting commenced just fine until it got to the end of the >>LILO. All I am trying to do is to get Linux to boot! Anyone? TIA Jack Lavelle -- Phoenix -- lavelle@speedchoice.com

Go into bios & change booting from A drive to CD-ROM & that should work. Regards Mahmoud
