We are looking to set up a firewall on linux and I would like to get
some feedback from people who are alrready doing this. How is it
working? Do you have many problems? I've also heard that there are
free versions of firewalls. Where would I find this information? And
if they are not very reliable does anyone know of a good commercial
firewall to run on Linux? Any help or information you can give me
will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advanced, Debbie

See the TIS "FWTK - Firewall Tool Kit" from Trusted Information
Systems - www.tis.com. Search on fwtk or Firewall TOol Kit.

As to how easy it is to set up, I have done two of them and
found it easy to do following the documentation, but I can't
say how easy it would be for anyone else. Depends on how
skilled you are in general concepts, what you know about mail
and web and TCP/IP and DNS. You don't need to know heaps
but if you know nothing you won't get far.

Whether you use a software solution or the ipfwadm packet filter
depends on a number of things. I preferred the software because
oif the logging, if you don't need logging or password authentication
then ipfwadm may be enough for you.

IPFWADM is also very simple to set up if you only want a simple firewall

Debbie,

Firewalls are reasonably easy to set up under Linux. Iam using
the newer IP-CHAINS programs which replaces IPFWADM in 2.1.108
and newer Linux kernels.

Ip-Chains will be mandatory in Linux using the soon-to-be-released
2.2 kernels. So it may pay up to forget IPFWADM and go straight
to IP-Chains.

Have a look at:
Paul Russell (the local maintainer) at:
http://www.adelaide.net.au/~rustcorp/linux/ipchains/

Hope this assists you,
Grahame
