Apologies in advance if this is not the correct newsgroup. I'm new (to
these groups).
I'm having a problem with installing Linux (red hat 5.1).
I've made the boot disk and the PC boots up ok, the install program
starts, I select local CD rom and everything is fine UNTIL we get to the
'partition hard disk' section.
NO matter which of the two options I select I get the message that no HD
device could be found (Fdisk even go so far as to suggest that I didn't
configure a SCSI device).
The problem is that the HD {Seagate ST3290A) is an IDE unit (as is the CD
(Mitsumi FX800S}).
During the boot process (?) both these devices are identified. hda =
seagate, hdb = FX800.
I've tried setting the "slave is/is not ATA compatible" jumper on the HD.
I've changed the master/slave jumper on the CD. I've DOS fdisked the HD
(both with and without Active partition, I've even removed the partition
all together)... All to no avail.
The HD works fine under DOS (an I suspect the CD would as well but I
didn't install the DOS drivers as Linux is detecting and running CD
without a hitch)
The only other Card that is installed is a Trident video card, and all
the video seem to be fine. The motherboard is a 486SX-33/8M running AMI
bios (OPTI-495SX).
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong ?
Are there some command line parameters I should be typing in ?
Is there some compatibility problem I don't know about ?? (and given what
I know about Linux currently, that wouldn't be hard).
Am I just holding my mouth the wrong way ???
I think that's all the information I can give. Let me know if there is
some critical piece of information I've forgotton.
PLEASE HELP.. I've run out of ideas..
The only other constraint I ask is that you ALSO mail any replies to me
(as well as the list ?) as I'm having some problems with my ISP and the
linux groups. I would hate to miss the answer..
Thanks in advance..

I had a similar problem with a 386DX40/8MB, although in that case it
wouldn't detect the IDE CDROM, and the install prog froze when trying to
partition. I found some new install disk images from redhat, but these
still wouldn't work. I gave up and installed Redhat 4.2...
