If you are in a stituation similar to: +-----+ +-----+ |Win95| |Linux+--+===+ +--+--+ +--+--+ Modem | | +-------------+ Ethernet etc etc and you from you win95 machine to the linux machine you will be able to acces the modem as if you were on the console of the linux box itself, permissions permitting of course. BUT you will have to do something special if you want to run X (Gui) apps :) : any comments would be appreciated : Scott scooter2@geocities.com -- Yours Tony.

Hello, In alt.linux Anthony J. The software always accesses the hardware on the machine running your program, not the hardware of the machine running your terminal-program. There is no easy way to change this behaviour, because there is normally no network- protocol for direct hardware-access... :>If you are in a stituation similar to: :>+-----+ +-----+ :>|Win95| |Linux+--+===+ :>+--+--+ +--+--+ Modem :> | | :> +-------------+ Ethernet etc etc :>and you from you win95 machine to the linux machine you will be able to acces :>the modem as if you were on the console of the linux box itself, permissions :>permitting of course. BUT you will have to do something special if you want :>to run X (Gui) apps :) You can use the serial port of the linux box from every program running on the linux-box, there is no difference, where the program send terminal output to... but it is not easily possible to access the serial port of the linux box from a programm running on the windows box or vice versa. ciao, Juergen Ilse (ilse@asys-h.de) :>-- :>Yours Tony.

Scott's question seems to be 'what hardware do the programs I run on the remote machine access, to which the answer is 'the remote machine's.' A telnet session is exactly like running a console session on the machine you have right in front of you, except when telnetting the display you have in front of you is actually displaying a session on a remote machine up to several thousand kilometers away. -- Jason Stokes: jstok (at) bluedog.apana.org.au (I use a spam block in my header.
