Hi All, I am very much a "Linux Virgin" and I've just been installing Xandros 3 Deluxe and trying it out. I got this distribution since it was suggested to me that it was a useful distribution for those who have a lot of previous history sunk into Windows. Previously I have only tried some of the Linux Live-CD's. I loaded Xandros 3 as a second boot onto a Win2000 machine without any difficulty, and just using the short form "how to do". There is also a 300 page manual included in the $135 price. I was particularly interested in being able to run Microsoft Outlook 2000, since I have quite a large archive of Outlook email files. I loaded Office 2000, and also Quicken 7.5 under the Windows emulation written by Codeweavers (Crossover Office) and supplied as part of Xandros 3. Codeweavers promised nothing re the performance of Quicken 7.5, since they start by listing Quicken 2000 as the first Quicken program they support. Some features of Quicken 7.5 like the sound, and some backup file storage locations didn't work. Fair enough in my view since nothing was promised for Quicken 7.5. Nethertheless Quicken 7.5 could still be used for simple cheque book accounting purposes, which is all I use it for anyway. I then loaded Office 2000. I headed straight to Outlook. It found my archived email files over my network and read them. Good start! I was pleased. :) I then set up my email POP details. Soon I was sending and receiving test emails on my main email account. The only subsequent fly in the ointment being that the Gmail POP account timed out and hence wouldn't work. I should say that the Gmail POP account also takes a long time to connect using Outlook 2000 within Windows, and seems to be distinctly marginal in operation. The only other thing I've noticed with Outlook 2000 running in Xandros is that if I turn the spell checker on, it crashes Outlook 2000 on the first word it detects which is incorrectly spelled. So, no spell check possible. Codeweavers do say there may be odd things not working with Outlook 2000, but they are constantly improving things. I also tried it with one of my external USB drives. It worked fine, and connected and disconnected fine. I was readig the Windows data fine too. For any who are interested. :) Ross (To get email address ROT 13) ebff_qnyl@lnubb.pbz
