If I install a small (130Mb) 2nd Hard drive to my system, can I then get a Linux installation to use this to boot from but put all the rest of the installation onto partitions on my 20GB drive ??? Have tried to install 2 different 'flavours' of Linux so far and just get endless 0's and 1's filling screen on reboot, apparently something to do with an inflatable bed (LILO) (Tried TurboLinux 6.0 and also Corel Linux) Think u can see what I mean :) Thanks in advance. Arnie

Your question is kinda vague with me knowing what I know. lilo boots from the mbr or diskette. If you want a lilo mbr boot from 2nd hard drive, your bios would have a boot order selection for D. Is the 20g drive scsi? If pc is only a year or so old, lilo should be able to get to linus on the 20g.

System is Athlon 800, Seagate 20GB HDD IDE (ATA66), 512Mb RAM, 32Mb Geforce2 MX Video. Not a year old yet. Have already tried to install using LILO thing, about 10 attempts using Turbo Linux 6.0 (boxed version). I have also now installed Partition manager and have tried to install by moving the Linux boot partition right to start of HDD (to get around 1024 cyl or 2Gb problem), still no joy. Would like to avoid using BIOS to select boot setting if poss, already have BootMagic and that doesn't help (even though it saw the Linux partition and saw that it was bootable). Thanks for reply Arnie "Bit Twister" <reply_this_article@this_news.group> wrote in message news:mhOL7.113252$pb4.68729508@news2.rdc2.tx.home.com... > On Sat, 24 Nov 2001 08:08:35 -0600, Arnie Owen wrote: > > > If I install a small (130Mb) 2nd Hard drive to my system, can I then get > > a Linux installation to use this to boot from but put all the rest of > > the installation onto partitions on my 20GB drive ??? > > Your question is kinda vague with me knowing what I know. > lilo boots from the mbr or diskette. > If you want a lilo mbr boot from 2nd hard drive, your bios would have > a boot order selection for D. > > Is the 20g drive scsi? My /etc/lilo.conf has lba32 which lets me boot past the 1024 cyl point. -- The warranty and liability expired as you read this message. If the above breaks your system, it's yours and you keep both pieces. Practice safe computing. Backup the file before you change it. Do a, man command_here or cat command_here, before using it.

Lilo would have boot=dev/hdb or whatever the drive is (second controler would be hdc or hdd) and root=/dev/hdax where x is your partition number. > >-- >The warranty and liability expired as you read this message. >If the above breaks your system, it's yours and you keep both pieces. >Practice safe computing. You will also notice the lilo doesn't start nt. The line image = /boot/vmlinuz is the important one here. When you run lilo it needs to know /boot and root / then it can place that in the mbr. You would have the section that points to windows. > >RogerB wrote: > >> On Sat, 24 Nov 2001 15:30:10 GMT, Bit Twister >> <reply_this_article@this_news.group> wrote: >> >On Sat, 24 Nov 2001 08:44:38 -0600, Arnie Owen wrote: >> >

Older distributions of linux(with 2.2.x kernel) don't have support for disk with ATA66 interface, maybe that is problem ... try newer distribution with 2.4.x kernel(rh7.2,mdk8.1) -- You came out of nowhere with drums of thunder and a heart of gold.
