Hi,
I'm a new be at linux I try to set up a dhcpd service. So i can share
my internet (ADSL) connection. The problem is that my client (win 2000)
computer is given a ip number, but it is incorect. For exemple 196.128.0.54
with subnet 255.255.0.0 !!!!
while this is my dhcpd.conf file.
subnet 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0{
range 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.50;
}
What am i doing wrong???
ps. When i use mandrake's drakconnenct (or somthing), i get a
dhcpd.conf.orig file instead of the dhcpd.conf file. Even then it goes
wrong..
Greetings Henk.

I don't know if it means anything, but I always thought the 1 at the end of
your subnet should have been a 0

try changing "192.168.0.1" to "192.168.0.0" in first line

Mine:
subnet 10.4.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 {
authoritive;
option subnet-mask 255.255.0.0;
option broadcast-address 10.4.255.255;
I think you may need to specify option subnet-mask to send to clients.
The external one might be more of an identifier and the internal one is
configuration information for clients.
DHCPD seems to use the "subnet xx.xx.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0" to
identify the interface it is listening to for that configuration. I
think it possible that it isn't considered configuration information.
I am not going to test my machine because it is production, but maybe
that helps you...maybe not.

subnet 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0{
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
range 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.50;
Most any software that assumes anything about IP layout, will assume
that subnet #s fall on predetermined boundaries -- same for broadcast
addresses. This is especially true with classfull routing.
Make sure you're not "stepping" on the dsl modem's admin address.
Unless you have a number of hosts (> 5 or6) why bother with dhcpd?
Just use static addresses.
You might find this easier, more sensible to use for a smallish lan:
http://www.thekelleys.org.uk/dnsmasq/doc.html
But ...
Where _is_ your windows box picking this up?
Lookup 196.128.0.54 (unresolved) in 20+9 Zones
AS: [NO_ROUTE]
Net 196/8 IANA-NETBLOCK-196 @apnic.net.
Results: Positive=1, Negative=27, Timeouts=1 (2005-02-11 17:18:28 UTC)
BOGONS/completewhois.com: 196.128/16: 553 BOGON not allocated; BOGON
not announced
ie., this is not registered as allocated nor is it announced to other
ASes. It is a bogus address.
If you want to get this working to learn or whatever...
Check what you have in your dhcpd.leases file. It should record any
leases your dhcpd gave out.
Hopefully, the above is not your _complete_ dhcpd.conf. Your clients
will need a GW address and lease times/expiries, etc.
If you find the scattered man page documentation of dhcp a pain (like I
sometimes do) you may want to get (or bookmark) html man pages here:
