I hate to sound completely stupid, but sometimes such things cannot be avoided. So hear it goes; I would like to try my hand on a MUD, however my knowledge of ftp(our File Transfer Protocall) and remote access are limited at best. So, once I've connected to a MUD site(I've got an address list) how do I logon? (i.e. username and password) new? newuser? guest? what?

You don't need to know ftp or anything wierd. What you do need to know is the name (or ip number) of the machine the mud is on, and the port number the mud is on. These will be listed in the mud lists that make the rounds. For example, if the mud is at a.school.edu, on port 3000, on UNIX you do: telnet a.school.edu 3000 and on VMS, do: telnet a.school.edu/port=3000 Then it will prompt you for a name usually (for lpmuds, etc). This is not hard, since if anything is out of the ordinary, it will usually be explained. On tinymuds and the like, syntax is different, but usually explained in the login message. If you want to look around first (*always* look around first, please), use the name "guest" (unless the login screen says different - you did read the login screen I hope) which will usually take anything as a password. If you like the mud, then feel free to create a real character, by logging in again, but this time using a pseudonym name that you make up. If that character already exists, it will ask for a new password. (if the word "new" isn't in there, it's probably an existing player, so try another name) -- Darin Johnson djohnson@ucsd.edu -- How come my mind went off for lunch before I did?
