Rereading my post I didn't mean to say the Cockburn article said that
the Sierra Club and Audubum Society are sellouts. That piece of information
I deduced from my own personal experience with the New York City
chapters of both groups dealing with the aircraft noise pollution and
airport expansion issues.

You will find the Sierra Club fighting to protect the Grand Canyon and
Hawaii National Park from aircraft noise, but when it comes to PEOPLE
in cities experiencing 24 hour-per-day noise pollution, they are silent!
The New York City Sierra Club Chapter even has an airport employee
on the executive board pushing airport policies!!!

The Audubum Society in New York City is just as bad. They take money
from the airport to manage parks nearby. So they are not about to kill the
golden goose by complaining about the airport's efforts to destroy a bird
colony (the ONLY colony of Laughing Gulls in New York State) on a nearby
nesting area in a wildlife preserve.

So I don't give a damn about getting these two phony
environmental groups support on the aircraft noise issue. I just wonder
how many other issues have they used their position to sell out the
public and the environment for personal and organizational profit.

=o= With both organizations, there are local chapters with
varying degrees of integrity. And, it seems, the national
offices of both are rather volatile with their vision and
direction.

=o= I've come to a rule of thumb with the Sierra Club: if
they oppose something on environmental grounds, they're usually
right. If they chooose not to oppose something that other
groups are actively contesting, they've probably sold out.

=o= In California, at least, a Sierra Club endorsement is much
sought-after. Grassroots groups may get zero media coverage,
particularly if the media hacks can just say, "the Sierra Club
supports it." Sometimes they take a Sierra Club endorsement
and say, "environmentalists approve it."

=o= Alas, you can't even depend on these two groups to defend
the wilderness if there's some wheeling and dealing involved.
That's the sort of thing that led to the creation of Earth
First!.

=o= Groups that care about people are around; they're called
the environmental justice (EJ) movement. My ISP has a great
resource devoted to this movement:
