Robin Clay, the grandson of Scoutings' Founder, is both interesting and a real treasure of historical information. He is currently working as an engineer in Turkey. Visit the Jamboree BBS on the Internet and select the button for BP's Grandson! Have fun! http://plaza.v-wave.com/index.htm/

1. Write TO the Grandson? Or is this some novel or story you wish us to write? 2. DON'T SHOUT in your headline, this is considered rude in any ng 3. If you wish to let several different ngs know about it then post individually to each and do not cross-post, it shows a lack of care for your reader 4. Some of us picked up the first time that you had published something so why send multiple adverts on the same subject? All that happens is that some of us set our ng readers to block out your ID and so miss anything more interesting coming from you. Falco -- Strangers are friends you have yet to meet. I can see that using caps in the text of the message as shouting but using it in the subject heading...well, it appears that you are the only one that seems to take offense. Be it as it may, I will respect your wishes. Yes...you can write to Robin Clay. He's authorized me to set up a page where scouts can write him and they can ask questions about his famous mother and grandfather. This particular message was intentionally cross posted to reach the maximum number of readers, not to be rude and certainly doesn't show a lack of care for the reader! Other examples I will comply and since the intent wasn't to be rude I don't know how you can come across as the high and mighty and declare what is and isn't? You're the only one that's complained! You should meet one of my leaders who only types in caps and refuses to use lower case...you'd love his messages. So, go ahead and block my messages...you're too over sensitive anyways...I feel that I've done nothing offensive what-so-ever.

Or am I wrong?

Or am I wrong? You are correct. However, 'cross-posting', even if the topic is relevant to all groups, is a chronic complaint of the 'netiquette police', for reasons that frankly escape me. The one reason I've heard that does have some resonance is that replies to threads on developing topics which may be relevant in just one group continue to be cross-posted to all, unless trimmed. Or am I wrong? You are correct. Almost always, a single copy should be posted, but only to relevant newsgroups. Multiple posting to relevant newsgroups is a waste of time and resources. Excessive posting, to more newsgroups than is necessary, is an abuse of the Net (and a Merkin custom); it is bad whether it is cross- or multi-. Other than Net administration, where an article must be multi-cross- posted to reach all necessary groups (in which it will be meta-on- topic), the only justification of multi-posting is when an identical message is thought to be relevant to newsgroups of such widely different character that the follow-ups from some groups would be too off-topic for others. And then, it seems likely that it would be better to rewrite the basic message to suit the different targets. See, for example, item #14 of FAQNEWS1.TXT, in Timo Salmi's ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/link/tsfaqp.zip rec.scouting removed from Newsgroups line; it should not exist, as it was superseded long ago. -- John Stockton, Surrey, UK. jrs@merlyn.demon.co.uk Turnpike v4.00 MIME.
