I changed from OS/2 WARP3 (German Version) to WARP4 (German Version). MS WinWord 6.0 (German Version) worked alright under WARP3. Under WARP4 WinWord 6.0 asks for SHARE.EXE: - I copied SHARE.EXE from MSDOS (German) version 6. Starting WinWord 6.0 SHARE.EXE now signals: wrong DOS version. SHARE.EXE exspects version 6, WARP4 indicates version 4. - I added VSHARE.386 (from MSDOS config.sys) to WINOS2's system.ini without success. The message still appears. Who can give me advice? -- Beate Puerner puerner.tech.dok@nrw-online.de

One of the changes in the update from 6a to 6c involved elimination of any need for share. If the the German versions had parallel updates, then obtaining 6c should fix the problem. The us english 6c was provided free on diskette from MS customer service. -bb

This is a completely idiotic error message. Make an empty \temp directory somewhere and add the lines set tmp=3Dx:\temp set temp=3Dx:\temp to your autoexex.bat where x: is the drive where \temp is. (Only one of the lines is needed, but which one?). I had this problem some years ago and as far as I remember this fixed it. --- Dr. Michael Bode This message has nothing to do with the views of my employer.

I got Michigan 6a, but installed Canuck 6c or whatever MS sent me, overtop immediately after installing 6a. On the tel. to MS Canada, I was transferred to MS USA without realizing it until I called back to confirm the order, so I'm not sure what I got. I assumed the Yankee & Canuck versions were the same except for packaging, but maybe not. Somewhere in the docs it says something about the need for share being eliminated from 6a to 6c. -bb

Oh, the share.exe problem? Well, I don't come here to mention this, but I might as well start off that way. I got that message when I tried to load Word 6.0 into WINDOWS 95! See, the "new" hidden version of DOS doesn't have stuff like share.exe. Microsoft wants you to go out and buy the new/improved/better-than-sliced-bread Word 97. And that's if you are--as I've had to be because of my job--a Win95 victim. You need to copy "expand.exe" into a directory of your choosing by using an old DOS 6.0+ disk, then using it to load share.exe. MS Word will then load and you've bypassed the need to install a piece of software that is all bells and whistles and drags its ass even with 32 megs in the machine. Now, the reason I came here: the atrocity I bought recently--a Barron America AMD/Pentium 150--comes with tools for the Complete Idiot, including a CommWave 336 Pnp internal modem. I went to install OS/2 on a 600 meg partition I created but it could not find the modem. Big news. This is still Warp 3.0 I've got at home, and in that respect it behaves like Linux: no PnP, no sound, no modem, no nothing. The company that manufactures CommWave modems does not have OS/2 drivers. What a surprise (not). Non-PnP hardware is becoming increasingly difficult to find anywhere. So I have one of two alternatives: go out and get a real modem and then try to find drivers for the oh-so-modern hardware in my system while continue to use Warp 3.0...or going out and spending a LOT of money right now on the new version of Warp when I have no clue as to whether it handles PnP hardware. I might be tempted to drop that kind of money IF I know with reasonable certainty that I can do silly things like listen to CDs and dial my ISP, and that my shitty hardware will be recognized. Or is there another alternative. ANY alternative? BTW...advice from one who wishes he'd done this...DO NOT buy third party machines with plug and play hardware. Get an independent dealer to build you a machine to your specifications. Which means stay out of CompUSA and Computer City.
