Can someone provide a rough, ballpark estimate of how accurate a typical hydrophone might be? For example, suppose I want to measure the pressure radiated by a vibrating structure submerged in water. The hydrophones would measure the pressure to within ... what? Half a decibel? 2 dB? Actually what I'm looking for is the standard deviation of a typical sample of measurements from a typical hydrophone. I don't need an extremely accurate number for a specific model, just ballpark figures. Any help would be appreciated! Chris Ruckman ruckman@oasys.dt.navy.mil

"Way back when" I calibrated my hydophone at Black Mohican Cal Station in PA, I was happy to get it within 1 dB. The readings are usually done to 0.1 dB, but the reliability and reapeatability of all setups and instruments is such that 1 dB is the pro forma standard. You can demand anything you want, but it will cost you $$$ and time. Usually, +- 1 dB will not start any arguments. Ang.
