Arlec AM500 Wireless Alarm

After my townhouse was recently burgled, I purchased the AM500 Arlec
Wireless Alarm System (comprising Control Panel with inbuilt Piezo Siren, 2
x Wireless PIR Detectors, 1 x Wireless Reed Switch) as a stop-gap solution
after finding it for the incredible price of only AU$97 at the local Tandy
(I believe they're now on sale at this price at the jointly owned Dick Smith
stores).

Have been very impressed by it's capabilities thus far and was considering
expanding it further. Extra PIR detectors and reed switches are available at
AU$50ish each. What I was wondering is whether the Control Panel is capable
of monitoring extra devices. The system is advertised as 2-zone, but I don't
know whether this is a limitation of the control panel or it's monitoring
capabilities. Has anyone hooked up extra sensors or have any other
experience with this model? Given the price of the complete system, I was
going to buy another complete set-up for the 2 PIRs and extra reed switch
and keep the control panel as a backup. As long as their set to the same
channel this should work fine.

I haven't been able to find many comments about this unit online, apart from
a couple 6 month old posts about how happy people were with their systems
which they'd got on sale for $160. I know it's at the cheap end of the
market, but would be grateful for any feedback anyone could offer on it's
performance or expandability.

You should be able to add as much as you want, as far as I know it is only 1
channel, so anything that activates or talks to it on that one channel will
sound the alarm.

Also if you get the exernal siren for it do not put in the batteries until
AFTER you wire it up, otherwise the siren will sound continuously (should
have read the instructions first...)

I have "modded" the reed switch sensor and added a glass breakage sensor to
it without problems.

Interesting - thanks for the reply. Have got the external siren connected,
but not mounted outside yet. Will have to remember to remove the batteries
before I start wiring it up or fiddling with the connection.

Out of curiosity, what modification did you make to the reed switch, and
what model / price is your glass breakage sensor. I didn't see anything like
this in the Arlec range, so I'm assuming you bought it somewhere else.

Also, how have you found the operation of the unit so far? Any issues, false
alarms or other heads-ups you can warn me about?
