I have been spending the last few days in correspondence related to problems trying to verify signatures on PGP clearsigned e-mails. We have not been able to determine what causes signature verification to fail in some instances and would be interested if anyone has: (1) encountered this same trouble; (2) figured out what causes it; and (3) fixed it. The first series of correspondence was between two Eudora users. I would clearsign a message which authenticated fine for me. But when it was sent to the recipient, the authentication would fail. We double checked all PGP keys to ensure they were correct and they are. Eventually, we determined the problem was related to the word wrapping function in Eudora. When set to "ON", this causes some messages to fail authentication, apparently because of artificial characters inserted by Eudora. When set to "OFF", this seems to resolve the problem as between Eudora users. I thought this took care of the problem until I started mailing to a correspondent who uses Pegasus as his mailer. He continues to get authentication failures whether I have my Eudora word wrap set to "ON" or "OFF". Also, the failures seem to be intermittent. I sent several messages to him last evening with various configurations - word wrap "ON", word wrap "OFF", long lines in messages, short lines in messages, etc. Some of the messages failed authentication while others passed. Any message which is encrypted and signed will pass signature verification and I suspect that is because in the encrypting process, line lengths are set by PGP itself. It is only in clearsigned messages that we are seeing this trouble. I would appreciate any input with this difficulty. Thanks in advance for help! Paul Sinclair
