"The prevalence of morbid obesity is increasing in the UK. Recent UK
government statistics suggest that 20% of adults are obese and 1%
morbidly obese"
http://ceaccp.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/extract/8/5/151

"The United States has the highest rates of obesity in the developed
world.[99] From 1980 to 2002, obesity rates have doubled reaching the
current rate of 32% of the adults population.[105] Rate of obesity vary
by ethnicity and gender. In the USA 28% of men and 34% of women are obese
with rates rising to as high as 50% among African American women. [106]
The prevalence of class 3 obesity (BMI ≥40) has increased the most
dramatically from 0.78 percent in 1990 to 2.2 percent in 2000."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obesity

Liverpool, Merseyside had a population of 439473 according to the 2001
census (http://www.statistics.gov.uk/census2001/profiles/00by.asp). That
means there are around 4.5 thousand inhabitants of the area classified as
morbidly obese, of whom I must admit I have seen quite a few over the
years although not on a daily basis. If I were to switch on my television
set and look at one of these US- made Jerry Springer type shows how many
morbidly obese Americans do I see?

BTW I am neither a Liverpudlian nor a Scouser nor even British. Nor do I
live in the city of Liverpool, nor even in the county of Merseyside. So
basically I don't really give a shit.
