Hi All,
I was just wondering how many of you have been diagnosed with kidney
disease due to Diabetes. I have just been diagnosed and have been diabetic
for 15 years. I was curious to know how long it has taken for this kidney
type of kidney disease to progress to ESRD, as I understand it everyone is
different and it varies but I was sort of looking for an average number of
years. Also, if you have any personal experiences about ACE Inhibitors of
low protein diets as an effort to slow the progression I would really
appreciate any and all info you could share.
Thank you,
Anissa

Anissa, I was five when I got diabetes, had it for 27 years.
I was diagnosed lets see, 1988 with ESRD put on an ace
inhibitor...Capoten...I was on dialysis for three years and rec'd
my trans this past April. (kid and pancreas). My advice, and this
may be different for some folks, watch your protein intake and
blood pressure and get on an Ace inhibitor. Good luck to you,
you will be in my prayers. Cheryl

I have Diabetic Kidney disease and have had Diabetes for 12 years. This
spring, a 24 hour urine gave a reading of 682mg.

I am on 20 mgs of Monopril, low protein and the pump. With better glucose
control, the ACE inhibitor and lower protein intake, things are improving.
I had a microalbumin test which, after a few months showed things had
cleared to almost normal, but someone in teh other group said do not
celebrate until another 24 hour urine show it that way. He feels
microalbumin does not tell the whole story.

For what it is worth to you, my doctor requested that I monitor blood
pressure at home...he feels that keeping blood pressure low at this point is
as important as maintaining good glucose levels. I have Type I, with a late
onset.

Anissa,

As you said, everyone is different and we all respond differently. It also
depends upon how far your kidney disease has progressed when it is first
caught and treatment begins.

Do you have results of blood and urine tests? Did you ahve a 24 hour urine
test done with a creatinine clearance?

I have been on an ACE Inhibitor and on a low protein diet for over 12 years.
I also watch my blood pressure and maintain as tight of control as I can
muster (usually the HbA1c is around 7). It all has helped as I have not
lost much kidney function over the years.

I couple years ago I was very upset because they stopped measuring
mciroalbumin because the amount of protein in my urine was too high,
however, things have not really changed since then. Looking back, I wish I
would have quit smoking sooner, perhaps things would not have slipped as far
as they did.

This is not to say that things will always be stable. Something may change
it all tomorrow and the kidneys would quickly fail. I hope not, but at
least I am doing everything I can to keep what I have.

To give you an idea of where I am at, in 1988, my total protein was 500
mg/day. Now days it is measured in grams per day but would convert to 1400
mg/day.

Hi,
  http://www.therockspot.com/diabetes.asp talks about ESRD in
the "complications" section at the bottom of the page. Check it out. It
might contain the information you are looking for.

I am diabetic but my kidney disease is unrelated (FSGS os suspected) but I
take an ACE inhibitor (Cozaar) to help slow down the rate of decline. I've
only been taking it since April and I'm still hyperfunctioning and still at
3+ grams protein per day. Perhaps it would be worse without the CozaarI
asked my nephrologist about low protein, and he said he was a big proponant
of it until a bunch of recent studies showed the same rate of decline in
kidney function between those on low-pro and those on a regular diet.

My kidney problems started LONG before I became diabetic. In my case it
took about 7 years to go from just high protein to nephrotic; the time
between normal creatinine clearance and hyperfunction was 8 months (the
same amount of time for my protein to go from pretty big to nephrotic).
