Online Shopping Mall Is Big Help For Persons
With Disabilities and Elderly
The first of its kind Web site and online "shopping mall" for people with
disabilities and the elderly, which was created in 1994 by JJ Marketing of
San Diego, has become a success beyond the dreams of its pioneer founder.
James W. McVay, himself a quadriplegic since age 16 and head of JJ
Marketing, created the Internet site, The Boulevard, at www.blvd.com,
because of his awareness of how difficult it was for people with
disabilities to locate special products and other needed durable medical
equipment.
The site allows online visitors to view the offerings of over 200 different
companies and thousands of products and services. Visitors can be linked
directly to company Web sites for information or to make purchases or
inquiries.
According to McVay, when someone is faced with an unexpected disability,
whether temporary or permanent, the person needs a place to find products
and services to assist in dealing with the new challenges.
Accessible housing, accessible vehicles, adaptive clothing, bathroom aids,
incontinent supplies, wheelchairs and accessories, and numerous other
categories and products are among the links available on the site.
Typically, a number of suppliers is available for each product category,
which allows computer users to shop comparatively. The Boulevard also
offers a classified ad section where people can buy, sell, or trade items,
and it has chat rooms, discussion boards, and medical links.
The Web site's success is, in part, measured by the over 600,000 hits per
month it receives, with approximately 25,000 consumers using it per month.
McVay was graduated from Southern Illinois University with a degree in
finance. His resume includes working for the Internal Revenue Service,
Continental Illinois National Bank, and Xerox. His first entrepreneur
venture was Topcat, manufacturer of a device to help disabled individuals
load and unload wheelchairs in and out of their vehicles. McVay has also
worked as a real estate broker, senior investment specialist, and director
of sales and marketing. In addition to being the president of JJ Marketing,
McVay is general manager of the Ability Center, a firm that specializes in
mobility devices, including van conversion, wheelchairs, scooters, and lifts
for interior and exterior use.
