NEW WEB REGISTRY ON HEART ABNORMALITIES
Physicians at Georgetown University in Washington are using the Internet
to teach people about potentially fatal, medication- induced heartbeat
abnormalities. People looking for more infor- mation on these problems,
known as arrhythmias, can visit http://www.qtdrugs.org.
These irregularities might result in fainting spells or even sudden
death. Many different drugs can cause an arrhythmia because they affect
a chemical channel found in heart cells. "The drugs with the highest
chances of causing these arrhythmias are anti-arrhythmias,
paradoxically," says researcher Michael Kilborn.
"Probably the second riskiest group is anti- psychotics. Then there are
antibiotics, antihistamines and some analgesics."
The website lists drugs known to help cause arrhyth- mias. The registry
also allows physicians to collect clinical information and genetic data
on people who suffer from arrhythmias.
If your doctor thinks you might have had a drug-induced arrhythmia, you
can report your case on the Web site or by calling 202-687-1064 or
202-784-4113.
