This is FYI, in the event that the info about this "Good Times" e-mail
virus which was forwarded to me, is accurate and valid.

According to forward from mhorn@ccnet.com, hammfam@aola.com,
parkersdad@aol.com, Tgreger@aol.com, clover@A.crl.com, as forwarded to
HannaClay@aol.com, and then to the members of an aol tv show club, the
FCC supposedly released info "Wednesday" (orig forward dated 6/6) as
follows [I have snipped and condensed]:

The "Good Times" virus, purportedly authored and distributed by an AOL
member, infects via e-mail. If you get any e-mail message with its name
in the Subject line, DO NOT READ THE MESSAGE, DELETE THE MESSAGE
IMMEDIATELY. It reportedly rewrites your hard drive, puts "Stones",
"Airwold" and "Michaelangelo" to shame, and NO PROGRAM NEEDS TO BE
EXCHANGED FOR A NEW COMPUTER TO BE INFECTED; it can be spread through
e-mail systems on the Net. Once infected, either the HD is destroyed, or
the processor is placed in an "nth-complexity infinite binary loop -
which can severly damage the processor if left running that way too
long." Most users would not recognize the tainted message for what it
is, and loading the file in the mail-server's buffer causes the virus'
mainline program to initialize and execute. It will send copies of
itself to everyone whose e-mail address is contained in a receive-mail
file or a sent-mail file, if it can find one. "Could you pass this along
to your global mailing list as well?"

Whether this is actual or not, I have no way of knowing, but I am
forwarding the info just in case, to the NG's to which I suscribe.

Best Regards,
M. Bates

The good times virus is a hoax perpetrated by and upon people who
apparently don't know any better.

I have seen this hoax at least ten times. No one ever explains why the
author would give it such a give-away subject line. Why not call it "Re:
your question" or something innocuous like that?

Sincerely,
Jennifer

Well, thank you very much for letting me know that. We can't all know
everything, about everything -- especially a hoax which is over a year
old. Too bad you apparently didn't take the information, albeit a hoax
(which I obviously didn't know at the time) in the spirit in which it was
intended. It may interest you to know that I posted a correction a short
time later, as a kind soul *did* email me with the hoax info and the Good
Times FAQ address which I included in my correcting apology.

You are fortunate to be so well and historically informed.

The Good Times virus, like almost all the chain mail letters,
works by getting nice people to forward it to everyone they
know or something bad will happen (or something good won't happen.
They can nearly paralyze the internet. There is no email virus
that wipes out harddrives. The letter, and the worry it causes
and the backlash of illwill towards nice-hearted people, THAT's
the virus.

Craig Shergold doesn't need cards. Nieman-Marcus doesn't make
cookies. Elementary kids don't need you to forward letters
to everyone you know. ***MAKE MONEY FAST*** doesn't work.
All are bogus, and all come around regularly. Don't spam.

I don't think Joe (or Jennifer) were trying to be mean in what they were
stating, only being informative, but I could be just playing Pollyanna
here...

At any rate, I, for one, am thankful for your good intentions, even if
it was a misguided effort, I think it was still done in good faith for
the manner of considerately alerting other newgroupies to a possible
danger--after all, isn't it supposed to be the "thought that counts"?
