Computer crash when mail is received

Hi,

For the last couple of days when I have received my mail from Demon my
computer has been crashing.

Im using an Amiga 1200 and running the Thor program (version.2.31) this
setup as been working fine for the last couple of months but this fault
has started occuring since about Tuesday morning.

Since then when getting mail Ive have suffered about six crashes. The
one thats just occured was with mail delivered from punt4.

I received the two pieces of mail and when the quit message from the punt
usually pops up, the screen froze and a reset occured.

Is the problem occuring at my end or is there something wrong with the
mail system?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Darren

Almost definately your end.

Most likely you've got a mail item that's crashing your mail server.
You don't say what mail server you are using but if it's in.smtpd
there is a known problem, particularly with earlier versions.

Is the senders address always the same for the mail item you get just
before the crash occurs?

Try replacing in.smtpd with the latest version from
ftp.demon.co.uk:/pub/amiga/installer/tcp/AmiDisUtils2.lha

If that doesn't work you can try asking Demon support to remove the
offending mail from the punt if you can identify it.

Or try GetMail which doesn't have the same problem:

The usual problem is a bug in in.smtpd (it can barf at long lines).

Several sol'ns.

Use a prog like TNT or MCP to trap gurus (not a great sol'n but it should
at least prevent a crash).

Upgrade in.smtpd, (I don't actually know if the newer version deals with
the problem better or not, but you might as well) there's a newer version on
demon in installer/tcp/AmiDisUtils2.lha

Use the smtpd prog from InetUtils. This should download the mail properly.
You may want to try using it instead of in.smtpd permanently, but note that
there have been problems reported in using it with demon. To install it
following it's install procedure and edit AmiTCP:db/inetd.conf and comment
out the smtp line.

Use Phil's getmail prog (on his website www.stokes.demon.co.uk probably)

I've removed the Thor group from the Followups since this is AFAIK not its
fault, it uses POP3 to get mail. Of course it may be a problem in importing
your mail if this happens automatically, but I think that's unlikely.

This reply is a little late in coming, but I had to put my two-pence worth in.

Was the message that caused the crash from btinternet.com. This is a huge 130K
message which definitely caused in.smtpd to crash.

After chatting to the guys on #DISA (thanks Andy), I installed Phil's GetMail
( just download it via the Web and follow instructions, it's easy to do) and
it works great.
