Amiga LHA files opening on PC?

Hi!

I have a fair number of LHA files that were compressed on Amiga's. They
have long files names in the archives and the PC LHA software that I can
find chokes on these files.

Is there a PC utility that will expand these files in Windows 98?

Somewhat long-winded, but you can run UAE and un-LHA these under
emulation into a directory on the PC (setup UAE to run using the PC
filesystem rather than a hardfile). Works for me:-)

Not that I knew - but if there is one, I'd like to know as well!

Try the latest versions of Winzip from http://www.winzip.com/

It seems to cope with lha, gzip and tar files IIRC. Oh, and the hideous
and evil kludge that is known as "long filenames"...

It can be done using LHA for DOS running under a DOS box in Windows 95/98.
Don't use Winzip or anything else. Hopefully I've remembered the syntax
correctly - I haven't an Amiga LHA archive to hand to try it out
unfortunately.

Anyway, you need to type the following:

lha x /x /p /a [name of lha file].lha

I do remember that it might not get the filenames correct, but you can
rename them once they're out of the archive. You need a DOS box under
Windows to get the long filename support.

LHA for MS-DOS should be available from any decent large ftp archive
(ftp.demon.co.uk perhaps?). Version 2.13 or 2.55 are two I have.

Hi-
In order to unpack Amiga LHA files, under Win9x, try Quick View Plus. This handles
viewing and unpacking LHA files just fine, including long files names. A
functional but time lmited demo can be downloaded from Jasc's site:

http://www.jasc.com/qvp.html

In a related topic, LZX files can be unpacked using Unlzx from Aminet:

I think you'll find that there is a "plug in" for WinZip that allows it
to handle lha's much the same as it does zip's - including the long file
names, not sure where you can get it from but I have seen it in use.

Winzip needs the dos version of lha available. It is that which IIRC has
problems with long filenames.

Its a pain to find utils that can extract many formats. check this out, it may
help:
 http://www4.windows95.com/apps/98/compress.html

I havent found the lzx or havent dl-ed it yet. It is possible to extract Lha and
Lzx, it is just that PC land hasnt catched up with improved arvhiving as I am
told:-)

It's a pain really. We should all just use Zip!
