Years ago I used this thing called an 'Icecable' (bought it by money order
in Oz).

It was a cable with a bit of hardware attached to it, that enabled the Mac
to think that any PC dot matrix/bubble jet was an Imagewriter (you choose
which PC printer from a series of DIP switches). One end plugged into the
Apple printer port, the other into the PC printer.

Simple plug 'n play solution, no software emulation involved. Maybe you
could pick one of these up second hand somewhere?
