I have twice, in recent months, experienced the effects of a dead battery,
and in both cases these effects included an inability to boot from the hard
disk or the floppy (I was able to force a boot from the CD, only to be
greeted with the tell-tale warning that the date and time were incorrect).

Current battery price is $26 (groan).
