Need help with my CD-Rom installation

Hello -

I have a Macintosh Centris 650. I had an extra CD-Rom
(Sony) that works for Macintosh.

I installed it, but it doesn't show up on the desktop.
I tried SCSIProbe - Mounting. When I do this, the CD
spinns and the lights change, so I can see that it is
accessed. But it still doesn't show up on the
desktop.

I also changed from SCSI 3 to 5 and 6 and it didn't make
a difference.

I would really like to get this CD to work.

Any suggestions on what to try.

Thank you very much in advance.

Regine.

How do you know the Sony drive "works for Macintosh", and what do you mean
in this case by "works"? Unless the CD drive has Apple ROMs it will not be
handled by the driver software that is embedded in the Mac OS. You will need
a third-party driver, such as CD-ROM Toolkit, or a hacked version of Apple's
embedded driver.

SCSI Probe command "mount" is for hard drives only (and removable drives
that can be read as hard drives), and then only drives where the media is
already formatted for the Mac (and which have the driver software on the
media).

There are some combinations of non-Apple CD drive, OS version and Mac cpu
where you can perform the trick of reading the driver software from the
(bootable) CD media. In these cases a non-Apple CD drive can be made to
mount on the desktop without extra software. But this is done by booting
from the CD, not by mounting the CD after booting from elsewhere.

Get somewhere a shareware driver "CD Sunrise". With that you can run
many different CD-Roms in Macs.

I used that on a 7100 that I fitted a CD-ROM drive to. The I found that
the CD/DVD extension from OS8.6 easily available from apple sites,
worked fine with OS7.6.1, and was quicker than CD Sunrise, and was
compatible with more CD formats.
