Hi Everyone,
I have for days now been trying to move a bunch of files between my mac
at work and a directory on my Novell server here. In fact I have the
same problem sometimes just moving files between two Macintosh machines.
Whilst trying to copy files I commonly have the os bail out with a
System Error -37, or -50. I have been to the Apple site to get
descriptions but they are not very helpfull
ie) -37 bdNamErr Bad File name; there may be no bad names in the
final system
-50 paramErr Error in user parameter list.
I am using Mac OS 7.6.1 on all our machines. You get the same problem
whichever mac you use in the department and with completely different
files. I am copying the files just by dragging and dropping them.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated as I am a new mac user
(My job is as a Novell and NT administrator) and this is really turning
me away from what I hear should be a very good OS.
thanks,
Craig

My guess would be disk errors ... caused by directory or other damage.
Error codes 33-61 are all file system errors ... which usually point to
disk or directory damage. Try the following:
1. Run Nortons, TechTools or whatever over the shared disks on your
network to check their state of health.
2. Then run a copy of DiskWarrior (from Alsoft) over the puppies ... it
cleans up disk errors that Nortons and TechTool don't.
3. Then do a desktop rebuild on all disks. (I use a Shareware puppy called
File Buddy for this, but you can simply hold down the Apple key, the
option and the shift keys when you do a reboot for a quick and dirty
rebuild.)
Regular maintenance always helps ... no matter what operating system you use.
Finally, if it ain't a corrupted shared disk problem then it could be an
extension or corrupt preference file problem ... check your network
extensions (particularly those on the servers) and try junking the
Preference files for those extensions.
Regards,

I've had the same hassles with a server. There's a Mac shareware program called 'Name Cleaner' - if I remember correctly - available via shareware.com, etc Hope this helps, Lynzz --

If the same thing is happening no matter which way you network copy files, you are not dealing with a problem of any specific machine. You are dealing with a network problem, which most likely means someone stomped a patch cable or some other simple thing. Could also be a defective hub/switch, but much more likely a cable about to go completely bad. Could be other things, too, but it smacks of bad cables. AppleTalk isn't much on error recovery... and why is it network admins never seem to think the network might be causing the problem? ;) -- Travis Anton, Digital Spokes Model BoxTop Software, Inc. - http://www.boxtopsoft.com "BoxTop Software's ProJPEG plug-in consistently produces JPEG files that are routinely 50% smaller than Photoshop." - Jon Warren Lentz, Mac Art & Design, Photoshop 5 Reviewed.
