Hi All;
I have a MAC SE 30 8/80, it is currently running system 6 and I want
to run system 7.5.3 at least.
I have a PowerBook 1400cs, that came with asystem 7.5.3 on CD-ROM.
I created an appletalk link between the two computers and tried to
install system 7.5.3 from the CD over the link to the MAC SE 30, but
the install program said that this system is not suitable for the
software.
I also need to at least be able to run disk first aide on the disk,
but I can not because I can not get a basic boot disk and the first
aide program on the same 3.5 inch disk. Also when I boot from a system
6 3.5 inch disk the internal hard disk does not show up on the
desktop.
Is ther something I am doing wrong? Apart from getting another hard
disk or a removeable disk drive (ie Zip disk) is there any way of
getting the Mac se30's hard disk partitioned (into sys:20 Apps:30
work:30) and system 7.5.3 installed????
The problem is

The OS CD that comes with a Mac usually is specific to one or a few Mac models and does not contain a universal OS. You can download 7.5.3 (and the update to 7.5.5) free from Apple - then install it from the 1400 to your SE. OS 7.5.3 (universal install) is now a free download from ftp.apple.com A boot disk with Disk First Aid on it is included. It's about 19 disks though so it'll take a while to download. You can repartition the drive using Apple's HDSC or DriveSetup but you'll have to wipe it first. Maybe back it up on the 1400 via AppleTalk or SCSI disk mode. 50MB shouldn't take long (well - it'll take a while via AppleTalk!). 7.5.5 is a 3-disk free upgrade also at ftp.apple.com Since you're switching from OS ^x to 7.5.3 the installer should install Apple's 32 bit enabler extension (also known as Connectix's 'Mode32'). It cleans up the SE/30's 'dirty' ROM. It permits you to see more than 8MB of memory under OS 7x. I know you want 7.5.3 but if you just want to quickly put OS7.0.1 on, you can download that free (@ 6 1.4 disks). However, the boot disk is, strangely, OS 6.0.8 which is not very helpful. Hi all;
Thanks for the advice.
I downloaded the english universal version of system 7.5.3. The
problem was how to repartition and/initialise and install the new
system. As system file for a 3.5 boot disk and the programs to
check/fix and partition the hard drive do not fit on one disk and the
system would not let me swap 3.5 disks with the startup disk.
I solved the problem, after many hours of tinkering. I noticed my
Apple 2gs had a 3.5 800k disk drive connected.
So now I have the Mac SE/30s hard disk partitioned into System (30Meg)
Applications (30Meg) and Work.Area (20Meg) and system 7.5.3 minium for
your Mac installed. I zapped the pram, rebuilt the desktop and run the
Disk First Aide (DFA) program.
There is only one problem, the settings are doing crazy things, like
the startup control panal has all three parttions highlighted and when
I unhighlight them, select only the system partition, close it and
then either reopen it or restart the computer it is back to all
partitions highlighted. I thought it was the pram battery, but the
time settings are alright, it is even keeping time.
Another problem is that when I vertify with DFA I get this error
message;
Problem: Missing file record for this thread,
and then two numbers.
the numbers for the partition system are 260, 87
and for the partition applications; 58, 18
Can anyone help me, please :z
