Hi All;

Is it possible to use a SCSI hard disk between a Pc and a Mac.

I mean can I format and/or partition the drive to be able to work on
both platforms. Like I can with floppies?

get a program like mac drive to use mac formatted disks, even simpler though, macs can
read a PC formatted disk natively

Hi Mick;

The problem is the Mac does not seem to recognise a PC formatted SCSI
disk, they can not even do a PC format of a SCSI disk.

What I need is something like the zip disk tools software... I think?

Have a look in the File Exchange control panel, it has a checkbox for
"Mount PC SCSI disks at startup" and a button for "Mount Now". I reckon
that's what you're after.

That's odd... I've mounted PC-formatted SCSI drives before using
the File Exchange control panel under OS 9.1.... then used the Finder
to copy the files off it.

Hi;

That is all well and good, but I only have system 7.5.3 on a MacSE/30.

Aha, then you need MacDrive on your PC. That way you can make the disc
standard HFS Mac format, no problem for the SE, but the MacDrive lets
the PC cope with it.

I believe so, but you may have to compile your own kernel under Linux to
support the Mac filesystem. In fact, I intend to do exactly this in order
to rescue a mac drive, because I'm more familiar with Linux disk tools
(fdisk etc).

I believe the commands under Linux you'll need are fdisk (to partition the
disk), and mkhpfs(?) (to make the mac filesystem). Linux should be able to
read/write mac disks - you might have to do a 'man mount' for the relevent
options for the mac filesystem.

Should still work - PC formatted SCSI disks come up using PC Exchange on my
Classic! (7.5.3). Even the CDRW works as a reader using the Toast 4 driver
on the Classic! (good for reloading s/w from CD).

Cheers,

The Mac SE/30 in question has no expansion slots for an ethernet card, so
networking becomes slightly complicated. Before finding an ethernet card
for my LCII, I used to use the "swap the SCSI drive between the PC and
Mac" route. Man, that sucked... Now, if only I could find an ethernet
card for my Amiga 2000... :-)

You're wrong; the SE30 does indeed have an internal slot which could be used
for color video or networking card.

There are also SCSI to ethernet adapters. AsantοΏ½ makes (made?) them.
