Hi All;
My father is going to buy an Mac SE30 5/40, can anyone tell me or give
resources to information on it. Like which OS will run on it, how much
ram can it have, what are the lastest software titles available, what
external devices can be attached, ie CD-ROM, extra HHDs, Scanners,
Quickcam...etc) and can it do filesharing or other network stuff like
the internet?
If it comes with an OS, will it have a word processor,spreadsheet,
etc?
Any help will be most grateful, please reply ASAP as he has just sent
off the money for it.

It will take up to 128 MB of internal memory with the addition of a file titled "Mode32" which should be available via Connectix's web site <http://www.connectix.com/>. The addition of this file allows the SE/30 to recognize over 8 to 10 MB of memory by making the system release being run think the SE/30 has what are called clean ROMs. The SE/30 dates far enough back that it shipped with System 6.0.3 but should be able to run up to System 7.6.1 if that's what y'all want. As for software, with sufficient memory it should be able to run most, if not all of the software released that will run on 680x0 systems. There are some games and a few other applications on the market that require either a 68040 or PowerPC processor but since the SE/30 has a B&W monitor, games may not be a top priority. The machine has an external SCSI bus on the back, along with an internally mounted hard drive so you shouldn't have much trouble connecting the SCSI peripherals you've mentioned. It, like most Macs of that time frame has AppleTalk built-in so it can be networked this way to other Macs but it doesn't have built-in Ethernet. The B&W monitor might make Internet use a bit bland when accessing most web sites but other than that factor y'all shouldn't have any problems using it on the Internet. ..... E. Goble # goble@kin.on.net # http://www.eastend.com.au/~goble # American Beach Kangaroo Island South Australia Hi David... As the owner of an SE/30 (my backup and portable Mac) I suggest that you should upgrade to at least 8MB RAM. Try System 7.1 first, it is fast and takes litle RAM. Upgrading RAM is a bit of a challenge, because after opening the case (which is not difficult) you must detatch all of the snap-plugs which connect the wiring to the logic-board. I find that an 8" locking hemostat is a great aid in this project...as is a very thin-bladed screwdriver, to unlock the snap-tabs on the plugs. Install 1-MB SIMMs (30-pin, 80-ns) in all eight slots. If you choose to install four, 4MB SIMMs you must install them in 'bank A', which is the one closest to the edge of the board, lengthwise. Leave the smaller SIMMs in bank B. There are severa websites (Lowend Mac) which detail this to some degree of accuracy. I suggest to download from Apple, the control panel called MODE32 v7.5, which enables the system to use more than 8MB of RAM. The SE/30 is a very fast machine. It came with an FPU. The BW screen is not an impediment, once you use it for an hour; but it will only display BW, not greyscale, without a special and rare add-on card. As for uh-uh, 7.5.5 is where the SE/30 (and others) max out. 7.6 and later require 32 bit addressing *natively*. Mode32 doesn't cut it. > software, with sufficient memory it should be able to run most, if not all > of the software released that will run on 680x0 systems. Definitely no problem accessing the Net. You'll be limited to Netscrape 2.02 unless you upgrade beyond 8MB of RAM though. (Ram Upgrades in an SE/30 happen 4 SIMMs at a time with 8 slots in all. 8MB=8x1MB SIMMs, next sensible step is 20MB 4x1MB + 4x4MB) Have Fun Martin -- [misguided@tourism.tas.gov.au IS a real email address, but it's for spam] Computer Systems Officer - Tourism Tasmania <ringnose 'at' tourism.tas.gov.au> User/Mail/Network Support & Admin, Lotus Notes Dev & Admin. As someone else said, it was fairly fast, and I had access to the Internet via an appletalk-ethernet gateway. I was also running Novell client on it. Since it should have a superdrive, it should be capable of handling DOS format floppies as well. I used mine to download files from the internet via mac, & DOS floppy to an Amiga !!! Others have commented on the screen, mine had a video card (3rd party) and colour monitor added, both screens were usable and I really liked it overall. And on what basis do you say "...DEAD, and *has been for a long time*!", Bertie old chap?" It opens no problem and runs just fine. An apology to Cathy is definitely in order. She unfailingly gives, and has given over a very long time, excellent advice on a variety of subjects. My guess is you tried once to access it and failed. It opens no problem and runs just fine. It is not a question of "opening and running just fine." Have YOU been able to download any of the software listed at this site? If so, which? I have tried this several times over a period of several weeks and am unable to do it. Furthermore, when I go to the website of J. Bipes, there is a message there about software for old macs. This message says something to the effect that the site is "closed" to downloading of software for old macs. Which is exactly what one is led to believe that he can do, based upon the list of software which is SUPPOSED to be available for downloading. Now once again, tell me exactly WHICH pieces of software you downloaded from the list presented, in the face of the "site closed" message! An apology to >Cathy is definitely in order. Perhaps if you had explained the basis of your claim when you made your snide comments about Cathy Stevenson, it would have saved a lot of trouble. People cannot be expected to test every site that shows up on the net - they are entitled to report their presence as was done in this case. She did not *recommend* the site as you claimed - her words were "You might want to check out several web sites related to older Macs". That's hardly a recommendation - it's simply a reference point. All you had to do was to note your observations about the site in a follow-up and in a civil manner, without the uncalled-for imputations about someone who is simply trying to be helpful. Hi All;
I have just spent the last few days, tring to install 7.5.5 onto a
SE30 8/80, it refused to recognise it. Then I tried system 7.5.3,
again no go. So I installed system z-7.1 from an Apple Update CD-ROM,
after copying via appletalk from my PB1400.
It (system 7.1, Claris OfficeWorks v4) run well. I tried installing
Claris Emailer lite 1.0v3, config PPP, Interent config, MacTcp,
Netscape v2.
This is where the problems happen, I run Claris emailer, connect and
it produces an error report, I try to open it and the computer
frezzes...
Can any one help, or do I need to obtain more RAM?
Any help will be most gratefull, thanks!

Hi Guys;
I found the problem, the claris folder was causing it, I removed it to
the desktop rebooted then moved the files inside into the new claris
folder.
Every thing works (sort of) in claris emailer, the menu font changes,
I assume this is due to only having 8 MB RAM?
