<Q> IDE HD's w/ Performa 5200?

I have a Performa 5200, and the Internal HD has recently given signs
that it will soon fail. I want to switch it with a cheap HD, but I don't
know anything about HD's. What is the difference between the IDE/AT, and
the EIDE drives? Will they both work in my machine?

More specifically, will either if these work in my machine as a
replacement to my current <800MB> pittiful HD:
        Maxtor K0685120A(IDE/AT, 5.1GB, 3.5in)?
        Maxtor K0183500A(EIDE, 3.5GB, 3.5in)?

If anyone has used one of these drives sucessfully, or has another
suggestion, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Shaun-

If you're going to upgrade, I'd stick with the EIDE internal drives, which
is what your computer probably came with. Or, if you'd like to keep your
existing drive, just buy an external SCSI - more expensive, but no setup
headaches and possibly a little faster, too.

The biggest problem I think you'll run into is getting the drive properly
formatted. You can't hook up two IDE drives at the same time, so you may
not be able to format a new IDE drive by yourself. Your best bet is to
find a local Mac consultant in the phone book and ask his advice and
possible help with the formatting and installing process.

What the hell are you talking about? You Macloser really crack me up...of
course you can hook up two IDE drives at the same time. In fact you can have
two per IDE port and most motherboards come with 2 ports (that's 4 drives
incase you can't multiply).

Or you can stick with SCSI (7 drives daisy chained).
Moron, don't give advise if you don't know what you are talking about.

External SCSI? What are you idiots afraid to unscrew the case? You need a
Mac Consultant to format a HD?? What a fucking loser.

Listen, Frank, aparrently you only partially know what YOUR're talking
about. You automaticially assume that because you were a brave little fellow
and took apart YOUR PC, you know everything about the computer world. Let us
remember that in older IDE drives, you could NOT have more than one device
per controller. This is because on some IDE drives, the on disk controller
could not be shut off to allow another controller to become the MASTER. So
you needed another IDE bus for another drive. Granted most PC motherboards
waste their time putting two EIDE interfaces on the board, but MAC's use one
fast, dependable, STANDARD interface we like to call SCSI (which supports a
LOT more than just hard drives and CD-ROM drives). And there are 6 devices
per BUS, not 7 (remember, the host adapter uses ID #7) (...unless you're
dealing with SCSI-3, or optical SCSI, but on a 5200, I doubt it). Plus he
said to use an External SCSI if, and I quote, "...you'd like to keep your
existing drive". Maybe you're not familiar with this little law of the
universe that states no two bodies can occupy the same space at the same
time, but in the compact world of Macintosh chassis' this could not be more
evident. Especially when trying to squeeze two hard disks, a CD-ROM disk,
15" monitor, plus all the other integrated goodies in a space of roughly
1.85 square feet. But fear not, you can attach any SCSI device externally
with absolutely no cost to the data transfer (unless your dealing with
drives faster than 10mb/s unlogicially). Oh, and another thing, on a mac,
Logical Block Adressing (LBR) is required, and guess what? IDE wont do that
for ya, baby - just EIDE.

So maybee you should take some courses, or better yet, get "Mac Hardware for
Dummies" at your local bookstore... you MIGHT learn something... =)

There's no internal SCSI ribbon or space for a SCSI drive in a Performa

Gino-

Couldn't have said it better myself. I don't know what kind of
frustrations Frank is trying to work out on us, but it's great to be able
to have Mac users just trying to help each other in the face of such
bigotry.

Which is precisely why I suggested a Mac consultant for this problem of
formatting a replacement EIDE hard drive. On the few occassions when I
have needed their assistance, I have found every person who works
exclusively (or at least principally) on Macs to be extremely helpful,
knowledgable and just plain good folk. I wish I could say the same for the
PC consultants I have to deal with on a weekly basis. Some good ones, some
bad ones, but most seem just plain pissed off. I don't know what that says
about the difference between the two platforms, but maybe someone should
do a study on the average life expectancy of PC vs. Mac consultants.

Yeah, you name me ONE major PC maker that adds SCSI as STANDARD and I'll
stand corrected. You really tried in that last post to prove me wrong, but
you justified the fact that everything you know applies only MODERN PC's.
You went on to say how all MODERN PC's support two standard EIDE buses on
board, and how MODERN IDE drives are more dependable and use LBA, but he was
not talking about a MODERN PC, he was refering to a 3 year old MACINTOSH.
One of the first models to use IDE. Rather that fuck around inside and break
the thing, he swallowed his pride and asked for help, never claiming to be a
computer genius. I do agree with you that that other guy should have done
his homework before volunteering his help. Most PC users I know will tinker
around inside untill they bend the pins on their hard drive, fry some chip,
or short something out. I use both machines (I actually built my PC because
I could'nt afford a MAC) and one thing I've noticed about most mac users
apposed to many PC users, is that MAC users don't pretend to know everything
about the computer universe. They view the computer as a tool which is
supposed to do the particular task at hand effectively and efficiently. If
they are happy with their computer, then it forfills this standard. Look at
it this way, every day people drive cars, use the toaster, the microwave,
and many other technilogical advancements we have created over time. Now I'm
sure not everyone has knowlege of how some of these things work, but why
should those who do ridicule them, treat them as completely inferior, and
ultamately deny them of this technology. I judge that this injustice is done
at large by most PC users. Even MAC users that are quite knowlegeable about
computers as a whole, agree that the personal computer is something that
should be available to ALL. This idea is what gave birth to the Mac, which
in turn inspired the creation of Windows.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that computers are (obviously) changing
the world. And I think that both platforms have somehting to offer. I would
not recommend a PC to my 65yo grandmother, not a MAC to my friend John, who
is the biggest Quake junkie I know.

Dear Frank

Mac is far from dead. The company has a history of being far
ahead of the PC technology. Bad marketing and bad management did them
in. The brains are still there and the software is very user
friendly. Apple did make one very good decision that will only begin
to pay dividends in the near future; they supplied every college
library with Macs at attractive prices. At the school my son went to,
they practically told parents that if you have a PC-leave it home.
The only system machine is an Apple.

When these kids graduate in large numbers, guess what they're
going to buy? And when they buy it, you'll still be a hostage to Bill
Gates. Guess who'll own the loser platform in a few years.

                                       Alan

No, I did'nt mean a model that used SCSI standard. I meant a major PC maker
that uses SCSI in all (or most of all) of it's systems. Compaq and WD
developed the IDE interface, so I don't think they would abandon it now =).
I know Micron uses SCSI in a lot of it's new systems too. My friend Andy
just got one with the adaptec AHA-3940... nice =)

Nope, I work at a University, in a faculty which is 50/50 Macs/PoeCees.
We've got about 150 users, four netware boxes and run IPX, IP and AppleTalk.
My VAXen are at the UCC, my Suns and PCs are at home. I've got a dead SS1+,
an IPX and an ELC. I've got an SS20 on order...
I've worked hard to get a clue. Maybe you should get a job instead of being
a typical garden variety USEnet PC-user KnAFAC.

Of course everyone knows that KnAFAC means, 'Know All F*ck All C*nt', don't
they? ;)
