Wtd: advice on buying RAM. Why such great price gaps?

Hi,

i have a lovely Powerbook 1400cs, with 16 mb RAM, and need to upgrade my
RAM. I've looking around for prices, and i can't help but notice a
great gap in prices. For example, at MacWarehouse, i can get my 24 MB of
RAM for 330$, but i've also seen 8 MB of RAM for 145$

What's the difference between the RAM i buy at Apple, MacWarehouse or at any
other place? And if they're the same, is there something else i should be
worried about?

Thanks a lot!

And to add to all the other advice:
If it's really cheap ... one should also make sure it's new ... not used or
traded-in stuff that might have problems.

First of all, Make sure that it is PowerBook Ram.

Second, The catalog and retail stores stock RAM. That means that they
bought the RAM at last week's/month's prices. That and their mark-up is
reflected in the prices that they charge. Most of the RAM manufacturers
will sell direct. Their current prices are more reflective of the price
fluctuations in the RAM market. Because they are selling to you right
off the assembly-line, so to speak, you get "today's" price.

Probably no difference other than price, but you're looking at the
=expensive= sources. Most people seem to deal with The Chip Merchant
(<www.chipmerchant.com>, I think), I buy from TechWorks
<www.techwks.com> in Austin.
