Computer always searches A: Drive?

I have this deviling problem and I need some help. I run among other
things WP 6.1 (16 bit) and Office 95 and whenever I goto file open, the
computer trys to open the A:\ drive. Of course there is nothing there so I
have to wait several seconds while it tries. Even if there is a diskette
in the drive it goes to look. Even if the last file I opened was on the
C:\ drive, it goes to the A:\ Drive. Even when the default drive in File
Open is the C:\ is looks to A:\ First. This happens in WordPerfect, and
Excel. It also searches the drive when I use Netscape or when I load a new
page in Netscape. I have seen other computers do this but have never
figured out why. I suspect WP has something to do with it as well. If you
have figured out how to fix this, please drop me an email. Thanks.

My system did that to me for a while. I believe that what happened is
that one of the last files that you saved was to a:\. I fixed it on my
machine by sticking in a floppy disk and then saving the file to c:\.
and then exited. When I went back in, it searched c:\ for the file that
I wanted open. This was with Word and would probably work with Excel,
I don't know about WordPerfect. I did use a program a long time ago
that this didn't work for, but I can't remember what it was. Oh well,
that doesn't matter then.

Good luck.

I'll add another response to the mix. There's a nasty boot sector virus
that will cause this, too. The fact that it happens in multiple
applications makes me suspicious of the "last file was saved to A:"
variety of responses. I believe the virus was called FORMA, but I could
be wrong. Get hold of a guaranteed clean bootable floppy with fdisk on
it, write protect it, boot from it, switch to C:, and enter

a:fdisk /mbr

Remove the disk and reboot. If you had this virus, it'll be gone. If you
didn't have the virus, you won't have hurt anything. Keep the clean boot
disk for future boot sector virus eradication.

I run Hijaak 95, and once you read anything from the
"A" drive, it will forever search the "A" drive trying
to find files to update it's catalog with. The catalog
turns icons into representations of the file that the
icon is for.

There is no fix for this problem in HiJaak, they said
to buy the new version.

I found a preferences dialog in WP, that allows you to set files
location. This sort of thing doesn't sem to happen on all the net'ed
PC's at work, but I don't know if the dialogs are set differently
