I have this Acer Aspire P100 PC model: 2560e. Cdrom drive is busted and I don't have any tech manuals for assembly / disassembly etc (these cases are tough to figure out). Acer Australia offer a big attitude like: "we cannot give this info to non Acer people" , their internet site is no better. This drive is curved to suite the case. Can I substitute a standard drive instead? Regards, Nir Gilmore

Hi If the case you have is the grey and green minitower then the Cd-Rom drive you'll need is the older BTC 6x/8x/10x and I think the 12x drive. The curved plastic "nose" piece clips onto the tray. BTC manufactured the drives under a multitude of different brands Creative is one. The newer drives have a trapdoor that the tray pops out through, and unfourtunately the nose bit will not clip on to the newer style tray. I don't think the old style tray is still made. To get the cover off, open the hinged front panel, [pivots right to left] inside you'll see a half round recessed handle.. just above it is a small diagramed locking fastener, turn it with a screwdriver to unlocked and pull the half round handle forward and the cover will slide off. A used Cd-rom drive should cost around the $30 to $40 range in the newsgroups. There is an additional bay under the cd-rom that a newer drive can be fitted but you'd have to open the front "door" to use it. Sounds basic but have you tried a lens cleaner cd. The cd-rom drives have the face plates removed and they tend to get a lot of crud in them. Regards Kent, Cairns Qld.

You should have an empty slot for the standard cdrom. Rails may be another problems tho -- http://www.bootdisk.com/ Quality Utilities And Help Files

From an aesthetics point of view - I don't think so. It may be however that your computer case has a face plate which just fits over a standard ACER CDROM. You can certainly replace it with a standard CDROM drive (don't get an acer - there's much better brands available. I've sold a lot of AOpen drives, and love em: I bumped into a customer last night who told me his is fantastic. My advise would be to find a reliable local shop who'll get you a 40x AOpen drive, and stuff how your system looks (BTW, AOpen isn't the only good brand, I just happen to know they are reliable:) Mark Osborne EarthedCT@Hotmail.com http://earthed.alphalink.com.au N Gilmore wrote: > I have this Acer Aspire P100 PC model: 2560e.
