Need help Instlling a Voodoo 5-5500 PCI in a Presario model 7465

Anyone with any experience with this?

I am replacing a Voodoo 3-3000 PCI with the Voodoo 5-5500. Is there
any particular slot I should use for the 5500? Also, my PC never let
me know at boot time if it was assigning an IRQ to the card/slot
which I first tried the card in. I honestly don't know what, if
anything I should have seen. Any help or pointers are appreciated.
I'm not very experienced on PC hardware.

I replaced the Voodoo 3 AGP card in my Presario 5838 with a Voodoo 5 AGP,
went off without a hitch.

Well my Voodoo 5 AGP is a big card. This actually was a bit of a problem as
I had to use the AGP slot, and the end of the card was conflicting with the
area that the various IDE cables plugged into the motherboard. I solved the
problem by detaching the IDE cables, installing the card, and then plugging
the IDE cables back into the motherboard in a way that they would fit around
the card.

I'd use whichever PCI slot would work the best in terms of space and airflow
considerations.

I would have thought that you would have received a "new hardware detected"
message. The best thing to do when replacing a video card is to change your
video adapater to the standard VGA before you shut down.

Not a problem with the PCI.

Good thought about the airflow.

Sorry, I was not providing enough detail. I did get a new HW
detection message, but I was expecting something additional about
the IRQ.

One last thing. The graphics appear better since the installation
(less jaggies), but I was expecting a better frame rate and that's
not there.

Thanks,

You're going to need a faster processor to push info to that Voodoo to
increase frame rates. I upgraded the 380 mhz K62 in my Presario 1685 laptop
to a 500 mhz K6III+ in about a half hours work. Picked up a solid 25% on
the speed, and the K6III+ (sold as a 450 mhz chip, can be reliably run at
500mhz) was only about $50 from Tigerdirect. If you're planning on keeping
your computer and you want more speed, and your processor sits in a socket
on the motherboard, this would be a good upgrade for you, I'd think (in
fact, for any Compaq owner who has a socketed K62 and wants a little extra
life in their computer).

One more thing, how much memory do you have in your machine? If you're
running anything less than 128 megs (and I prefer 192 megs plus, I've got my
Presario maxed out at 384) you should upgrade....64 way to little for
Windows 98.

Which Presario do you have? My 5600 was supposed to max out with 384mb, but
they fixed that with the latest (and probably last) bios update. Just
swapped on of the 128mb Dimms for a 256 and am happily running 512Mb now
(and windows 2000 advanced server).

Could be that you have FSAA on. That reduces the jagged edges you see but
decreases your frame rate dramatically.
