Dell memory upgrade and why so expensive?

G'day mates,

For some time I've been considering bunging some more memory into my
128MB Dell Dimension 4100 (1.1GHz version), but every time I look it's
about twice the price of "normal" 168-pin PC133 non-ECC CAS 3 SDRAM..

On top of that, the Australian prices are arithmetically two
(Kingston) or three (Crucial) times the US prices for Dell SDRAM
whereas on current USD<>AUD they should be more like 35% higher
numerically. [US Kingston is more expensive than Crucial, hence that
"two or three".]

Finally, there's the issue of double/single sided SDRAM which confuses
the possibility of using something generic rather than the "special"
(is it so special?) Dell stuff from Kingston/Crucial etc., because I
really don't know whether Dell uses "single" or "double" and none of
the spec sheets I've found mention this distinction -- and I'm led to
believe it's not obvious to see by simple inspection, in spite of what
those names imply!

All of which rather puts a bloke off if he's not too confident with
moding hardware gear, so I'm still considering rather than doing!

Guidance from those with experience would be most welcome, please.

Cheers, Phred.
