FWIW after a lot of hunting an seeing very little that didn't look like a laptop bag turned on its side, I've ended up with a padded sleeve from sfbags.com (whose construction, customer service and delivery is superb I might add) and a Kelty boomerang backpack which has a (not very padded) compartment that is just the right size for the laptop in its sleeve. You might also want to take a look at North Face who make a couple of latop versions of their bags (the 'mainframe' and the 'network' if memory serves) (ebags.com), the Spire 'zoom' (spireusa.com) or the Osprey helios (if you're after a serious backpack...) (ospreypacks.com)
