G'day mates (and good evening Rod :) Has anyone had experience with the Dell 2300MP Projector? Here in Oz, Dell seems to be having something of a fire-sale of this data projector -- so what's the catch? (Am I too cynical?) It's close to cheap enough for me to consider buying it! I'm suspicious. Does the lamp cost $zillion and only last for an hour or two? Gotta be some gotcha one would think! (Especially a cynical, suspicious, pecuniary bastard like me!) Knowledgeable comments and advice gratefully received. TIA. Cheers, Phred. -- ppnerkDELETE@THISyahoo.com.INVALID

A pretty good budget data projector, and nothing to watch out for that I know of, only that data projectors aren't as good for doing home theatre. They do a satisfactory job for most people, but videophiles will explain to you why you can't be happy unless you spend gazillions on hardware. Projectors are one of those technolgies that have improved remarkably, and gotten smaller and cheaper all at the same time. IIRC the lamps are as expensive as every other, about $600-800 (They may have come own since I last bought one).

FWIW, we just had to replace the bulb in a 2-year old BenQ projector that we paid about $1100 for. The replacement bulb would have cost us about $300 back when we bought the projector. Today it set us back $400.00 ouch. Probably makes it around AUD700 with exchange conversion and normal markups here. Sounds like I'll give it a miss. Thanks for your guidance, Tom and Unc. Addendum: With bulbs being so expensive (about half the cost of the projector in this case) one wonders who is going to keep them in stock in the long term -- or is it just assumed these products will die off quickly once out of warranty? Compare traditional slide projectors where some I know are still going strong 40 years down the track! Cheers, Phred. -- ppnerkDELETE@THISyahoo.com.INVALID
