New Dell & XP kills legacy Epson and Encyclopedia Britannica

G'day mates,

Friend of mine has just installed his new Dell 2400 (I think it was
when I pointed out the offer to him some days ago) so I'm a bit
jealous thinking of my 4100 with a lousy 128 MB RAM. ;-)

However, all is not sweetness and light...

1. For some reason his new machine can't even see his Encyclopedia
Britannica CDRs from a few years ago. And

2. The new Dell thinks his Epson LQ-800 is a fax! Won't install as a
printer anyway.

I checked the Epson site just now, and the help says even that old DMP
should be supported by Windows XP built-in drivers, so maybe it's just
something he's missing in the install. Anyone had a similar problem
and found the solution?

The EB thing is pretty weird if the current CD drive can't even read
the CDRs! He was able to install and use other CDR-based programs
such as that set of Australian topo maps on CD that came out a couple
of years ago.

Is it possible that the CD drives on modern Dell PCs simply can't read
older CDRs?

[ He says he expected problems with the Epson as only a few weeks ago
he stocked up with five new printer ribbons before they disappeared
from the shelves. And you know what Murphy does to the best laid
plans! ]

Cheers, Phred.

If you haven't already tried this......

As far as the Epson goes, you should be able to go through the 'Add a
Printer' wizard, tell it that you're installing a local printer, tell it NOT
to detect it automatically.

It should then ask you which port it's attached to (LPT1: normally)
It should then pop up a list of printers to choose from.
Select Epson on the left side
Select Epson LQ-800 on the right side.(yes it's listed there)

reinstalled.

So these problems are now your fault, stupid |-)

Jealousy comes with the territory for you pathetic povs.

Never is with computing.

Most likely just a dud drive. Get them to swap it. If the
replacement still cant see the CDRs, tell them to shove the
system where the sun dont shine and buy a better system.

Its just holding its nose because its such a dinosaur.

Yeah, very likely.

> Anyone had a similar problem and found the solution?

You basically need to select the printer from the list.

Thats just Dell shafting you pirates, you crim.

Is the media the same ? Likely it doesnt
like the media that Britannica is on.

Yes, there are some fucked drives around that are that bad.

It wasn't an upgrade, Rod. It was a new system bought to replace a
bloody awful Compaq. He was trying to install his stuff on it that
used to run on the BAC.

My apologies, Rod. I just used your name in vain when I replied to
BigJim thinking I'd clicked on your reponse. (Apology to him too. :)

We're on the road to recovery now -- all is well in the Labor Party
and the oppressed can rejoice and celebrate by flying pigs. (God
they're a bunch of hypocritical self-servers in the modern ALP!)

Yeah, hilarious watching it with the worst of
them attempting to pull the plug on Slimeon.

Not that I care, makes it even less likely that too many
will be stupid enough to vote for them any time soon.

Thanks for the advice Tim. The ancient printer is now installed!
(Must say I'm pretty impressed that XP has support for such old
peripherals!)

Returning to the "CD" problem, I'm afraid I jumped to a delusion when
he was talking saying his new Dell "can't even see his Encyclopedia
Britannica CDRs ..." Well, two delusions really. 8-)

1. I meant CDs, the pressed, manufactured things, *not* CDRs. I only
picked up on this distinction when someone in this thread started
talking about DirectCD and similar [thank you "someone" :-)] and

2. I was totally wrong anyway -- the bloody things are DVDs! (The
other program, which installed okay, was on CDs as I said before.)

Which leads me to ask -- is there something special/different about
the way a DVD/CD_RW drive "sees" install DVDs compared with the
various forms of CDs? I think his old Compaq had a plain vanilla DVD
drive, and that was no problem under Windows 98. But now this combi
thing under Windows XP doesn't want to know about these DVDs.

Is there some Control Panel or BIOS option that needs to be set to
enable the DVDs to work like CDs on these things? Or could the DVD
function be dead and the CD_RW side of things still be working okay?

Cheers, Phred.

Nothing special required. Does the Britannica program require installation?
With it in the DVD drive, open my computer and double click on the DVD/CDRW
drive and see if the install program starts up.

Yes, it requires installation so I will tell him to give that method a
go -- though I think he has already tried to look at the disk with
WinExplorer and couldn't see anything on it. Which made me wonder if
those combi drives can be dead for one function (e.g. the DVD in this
case) yet still work okay for the other (CDs work okay in it).

If this wasn't such luddite territory on the frontier of civilisation
I'd suggest he try another DVD disk in it, but having one is already
more than one would expect here. 8-)
